Position Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of monthly funding requests for Tanzania Projects to ensure the university’s working capital needs are adequately met.
  • Oversee the Grants section within Finance functions.
  • Prepare budgets (revenues, grants, staff costs, and other operating expenses), multi-year financial forecasting, management reporting, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with Deans and Directors to develop budgets, financial plans for grant proposals, and variance analysis.
  • Lead reviews of grant proposals from financial and compliance perspectives, including reviewing contracts, compliance sections, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Review financial plans for new research and bilateral grants.
  • Lead the timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and statistical reports for AKU Tanzania.
  • Implement a strong control environment to ensure the financial system’s efficiency, integrity, and accountability.
  • Oversee accounts payable and treasury sections of AKU Tanzania, ensuring financial records are maintained in accordance with IAS, IFRS, and institutional policies, including accruals of liabilities, grants accounting, cash flows, bank reconciliations, construction project accounting, and statutory payments (PAYE, WHT, NSSF, WCF, and VAT).
  • Oversee payroll processing and staff payment procedures.
  • Provide financial information to support decision-making, collaborating with Deans, Directors, and administrative management of AKU Tanzania.
  • Participate in external audits, collaborating with the Head of Finance and regional finance team during AKU-Tanzania’s annual external audit.
  • Coordinate and lead the preparation of AKU Tanzania’s annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Lead the preparation of feasibility studies for new programs and proposals in conjunction with AKU leadership.
  • Review grants and compliance reports, providing feedback to the PI, Deans, and Directors.

Professional Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Qualified Certified Public Accountant (Tanzania) with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • Over 5 years of professional experience in treasury and general accounting.
  • Command over accounting entries, adjustments, and banking operations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word).
  • Command over written and verbal communication in English.
  • Knowledge of ERP Financial Systems.
