Reports to: Legal & Governance Manager
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Legal Officer will support the Legal Department in executing its mandate by ensuring that the Bank’s legal interests are protected, compliance obligations are met, and institutional risk is proactively managed in line with applicable laws and internal frameworks.
MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
· Facilitate the registration and perfection of securities for credit facilities by following up on mortgage documentation, liaising with relevant service providers, and maintaining an up-to-date register to ensure accurate tracking and timely processing.
· Draft and review contractual documents, ensuring compliance and protection of the Bank’s interests, while maintaining an up-to-date contracts tracker for monitoring and reporting.
· Attend Disciplinary Committee hearings, provide legal guidance during proceedings, and ensure accurate documentation of decisions and minutes.
· Support litigation management by coordinating with external counsel, preparing legal documents, tracking case progress, and drafting periodic litigation reports to safeguard the Bank’s legal position and ensure informed decision-making.
· Support statutory compliance by preparing and filing company documents and resolutions with regulators and authorities such as URSB.
Take accurate minutes during Legal Department meetings and maintain an updated internal tracker to monitor follow-up actions and departmental priorities.
· Provide legal advisory support to internal stakeholders to ensure informed and compliant decision-making.
. Monitor emerging legal developments and contribute to risk mitigation efforts by updating internal teams on relevant changes in the legal and regulatory environment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
· Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution.
· Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre.
· Enrolled Advocate of the High Court of Uganda.
· At least 2 years of post-enrolment experience in a reputable financial institution or law firm.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCES
· Working knowledge of banking, employment, and land law.
· Experience in contract drafting, litigation support, and regulatory compliance.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and legal research tools.
· Strong legal writing and document review skills.
· Detail-oriented with good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
· High integrity, confidentiality, and a proactive learning attitude.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
