DRC Uganda is currently looking for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join our dynamic team as a Protection Assistant-Child Protection.
The overall purpose of the role:
The role holder will undertake all Child Protection prevention and response related activities that may include among others; case management, Child Protection trainings, awareness raising with children and general community, engagement with Para Social Workers, adolescent groups, parents and caregivers.
Your main duties and responsibilities will be:
Coordination
- Developing/strengthening relationships with agencies at the field level in close cooperation with the Child Protection Officer and the Protection Team Leader.
- Represent DRC in any relevant field-based thematic meetings with stakeholders as needed
- Actively coordinate with the field staff of other DRC sectors and other organizations.
- Actively participate in regular sector meetings and in house coordination meetings.
- Maintain and strengthen existing networks through other service providers at the camp level, to ensure that children receive quality services and support.
- Actively participate in scheduled meetings such as Child Protection Inter-Agency Coordination meetings.
- Work closely with the other protection sub-sectors to ensure ongoing needs of children and girls are met in the prevention- related activities.
- Strengthen existing referral systems and networks of psycho-social service providers.
- In collaboration with other partners, design child protection prevention activities/interventions within the refugee and host community.
- Participate in conducting training for Para-Social Workers, parents and children on relevant Child Protection thematic areas.
Project development, implementation and reporting
- Conduct case management services for vulnerable children at risk. These include cases of abuse, exploitation, neglect and violence, especially Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) and other children at risk.
- Identification and documentation of vulnerable children and timely updating of cases in ProGres.
- Conduct assessments basically Best Interest Determination (BIDs) and Best Interest Assessments (BIAs) for vulnerable children.
- Direct service provision through material support.
- Conduct referrals and follow ups for children at risk.
- C onduct alternative care placements for the UACs and assess their needs.
- Identify potential caregivers’ e.g. foster families for placement of UASCs using stipulated procedures throughout the project lifespan.
- Sensitize the parents/caregivers on their roles and responsibilities on early child development & protection throughout the project lifespan.
- Conduct home visits to foster care homes and assess needs, ascertain the living conditions of the UASCs and provide ongoing support to families, foster and alternative care systems.
- Facilitate foster parent’s training on Child rights and Parenting
- Conduct daily field visits to support para social workers, through mentorship and technical backstopping.
- Contribute to the development of advocacy points based on assessment of situation and risks
- Facilitate formation of adolescent groups to enhance community engagement & ownership on Child Protection prevention work.
Staff development
- Provide technical and programmatic leadership in Child Protection thematic area for Para Social Workers and other DRC community-based structures in Rhino camp.
- Uphold DRC’s code of conduct and principles of accountability.
Communication/Reporting
- Proactively contribute to quality and timely drafting of weekly, monthly reports,
- Support and guide Para Social Workers in drafting and sharing their activity reports.
Logistics / Finance
- Proactively plan and coordinate logistics and movement to the field.
- Support the Protection officers/Team leaders to monitor financial commitments and expenditures against budgets and provide timely feedback on budget follow ups.
- Follow-up all DRC procedures for security, Finance, Logistics, HR and Administration
- Comply with donors and internal DRC reporting and accountability policy and procedures
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Contribute to the daily quality implementation, monitoring and evaluation of child protection related projects and interventions.
- Identify, document and disseminate relevant project success, challenges and follow up on implementation of project’s action points.

Assist in participatory needs/vulnerability and capacity assessments of affected communities.
