Role Overview
The Chinese Interpreter will bridge the language gap between Backbone’s Chinese- speaking staff and local Ugandan employees. The role includes real-time verbal interpretation, written translation, and cultural mediation to support day-to-day operations, technical coordination, and stakeholder communication.
Key Responsibilities
Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation (Mandarin ⇄ English ⇄ Local language) in meetings, trainings, and daily operations.
Translate technical, administrative, and operational documents accurately and contextually.
Support cross-cultural communication, promoting mutual understanding between Chinese and Ugandan teams.
Assist with interpretation during site visits, external meetings, and logistics coordination.
Translate onboarding materials, policies, and production instructions for better internal communication.
Ensure confidentiality, neutrality, and professionalism in all interpretation activities.
What We’re Looking For
Fluency in Mandarin Chinese, English, and one or more local Ugandan languages.
Demonstrated experience in interpretation and/or translation in a professional setting.
Strong ability to interpret industry-specific language, especially in agriculture, manufacturing, or logistics.
High level of cultural intelligence, interpersonal skills, and professionalism.
Excellent listening, memory retention, and note-taking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree or diploma in Chinese Language, Linguistics, Translation, International Relations, or related discipline.
Previous work experience in Chinese-owned or agriculture-based companies is an asset!
Certification in interpretation or translation is an asset but not a requirement.
