The Driver will be responsible for driving and maintaining BIU motor vehicles, ensuring the safety and security of authorized passengers, cargo, and equipment in line with BIU policies and Uganda’s traffic laws. The role includes performing minor mechanical tasks and supporting operational mobility.
Key Result Areas & Responsibilities
Transportation & Safety
- Transport BIU staff and visitors as instructed.
- Ensure safety of passengers and luggage at all times.
- Observe speed limits and BIU travel guidelines.
- Ensure use of seat belts at all times.
- Ensure proper communication procedures are followed.
Vehicle Maintenance
- Maintain allocated vehicles in sound mechanical condition.
- Ensure vehicles are washed and cleaned regularly.
- Ensure timely fueling and servicing of vehicles.
- Report faults, breakdowns, or accidents promptly to the Procurement Officer.
- Ensure First Aid kits, spare wheels, and tools are available in the vehicle.
- Ensure all vehicle tools remain in the allocated vehicle.
Record Keeping
- Ensure all vehicles have log sheets and pens.
- Maintain accurate vehicle records including trips, fuel, time, and mileage.
- Record fuel fill-ups promptly in the log sheet.
- Ensure vehicle request forms are filled and submitted for travel authorization.
- Submit monthly vehicle log sheets to the Procurement Officer.
- Submit daily vehicle checklists and field trip reports after each trip.
- Submit vehicle repair reports before and after garage visits.
- Deliver and receive mail and maintain proper documentation.
- Collect mail from the post office regularly.
- Receive mail from partners/sub-offices and hand it over to the Procurement Officer.
- Ensure vehicle insurance (comprehensive & third-party) is valid.
- Notify the Procurement Officer three weeks before insurance renewal.
Mechanical Activities
- Perform minor mechanical repairs as needed.
- Road-test and certify vehicles after garage repairs.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Procurement Officer.
Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Uganda Certificate of Education (O-Level) minimum.
- Extensive knowledge of the Ugandan Highway Code.
- Strong understanding of the geographical area of assignment.
- English language proficiency.
- Flexibility and willingness to adjust to changing responsibilities.
- Valid Driver’s License classes B, CM, and DL.
- At least 5 years of driving experience; mechanical experience and NGO experience are added advantages.
