Job Purpose
The Compliance Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the company’s compliance framework. This role ensures that all operations and business activities adhere to statutory, regulatory, and internal requirements.
The Compliance Officer will monitor compliance with legal obligations, corporate governance standards, and industry best practices while supporting management in mitigating risk and promoting ethical practices throughout the organization.
Candidates with a legal background and knowledge of risk assessment practices are strongly preferred. Experience in the insurance sector and regulatory compliance will be an added advantage.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance policies, procedures, and systems.
- Monitor and ensure the company’s adherence to statutory, regulatory, and internal requirements.
- Conduct regular compliance reviews, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential gaps or breaches.
- Advise management and staff on compliance and regulatory matters, providing clear and practical recommendations.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to regulatory authorities, as required by law.
- Keep the organization updated on changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards affecting insurance operations.
- Design and implement compliance training programs for staff to strengthen awareness and ethical practices.
- Support the organization’s risk management process by evaluating operational, legal, and regulatory risks.
- Investigate any incidents of non-compliance or policy breaches and recommend corrective action.
- Maintain comprehensive records of compliance activities, audits, and risk mitigation measures.
- Collaborate with all departments to integrate compliance and risk management practices into day-to-day operations.
- Promote a culture of ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability across the organization.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of governance, risk management, and compliance frameworks.
- Assist in preparing compliance reports and documentation for submission to senior management and regulatory authorities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or related discipline.
- Professional legal certifications or membership in a recognized legal body is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of insurance regulations, corporate governance, and risk management is desirable.
- Additional certifications in compliance, risk management, or corporate governance will be beneficial.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in compliance, legal advisory, or regulatory functions.
- Experience in the insurance or financial services industry is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to implement compliance frameworks and maintain regulatory standards.
- Strong understanding of Ugandan insurance laws, regulatory frameworks, and corporate governance practices.
