Job description

Millennium University is pleased to introduce a unique integrated postgraduate mental health research programme, supported by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) as part of their African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) pilot scheme which aims to support the development of African researchers.

At least one in four people experience mental health problems, many of whom never access care and treatment. There are also large numbers of people with learning disability (prevalence c.2%). Mental health problems and learning disabilities generate challenges for individuals with these conditions, their families and the wider society, with often quite high utilisation of health, social care and other services. Those challenges are seen across the life course. The impacts of mental health problems on individuals and the wider societal and economic consequences are multiple and vast and include above-average rates of concurrent physical illnesses, shortened life expectancy, social exclusion, socioeconomic disadvantage, and the need for health and welfare support. Despite the high prevalence, many people do not receive the support they need and there are significant inequalities in access. This is an even more significant issue in developing countries like Malawi where the health system is already overburdened, mental health services are poorly resourced and the mental health workforce is overstretched.

A key aspect of the Mental Health Research Programme is building research capacity. By developing a critical mass of mental health research in underserved communities it is essential to build strong capacity with the expertise and local knowledge needed to make an impact. We are therefore pleased to invite applications for our Masters Programme. Following completion of this course, successful applicants can choose to progress onto the PhD programme.

Applications are invited from individuals who have a commitment to improving mental health and wellbeing of underserved populations in Malawi who wish to undertake health research postgraduate training as part of their development. Applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to establishing a long-term interest in mental health research.

Eligibility

Candidates must hold an undergraduate degree at a grade of 2.1 level or above in a health, social care, or related topic.

English Language Requirements: If applicable – IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.5 in each individual component) or equivalent.

Due to funding restrictions, any available scholarships are only open to applicants who can provide evidence of Malawi nationality/ citizenship.

please email Dr Sandra Jumbe  to ask for the application form.
