Mzuzu University (MZUNI) is a Public University established by the Laws of Malawi Cap 30:09 (Mzuzu University Act No. 12 of 1997). Currently, the University has six faculties of Education; Environmental Sciences; Health Sciences; Tourism, Hospitality and Management; Science, Technology and Innovation; and Humanities and Social Sciences. It is a dual mode University offering its courses through face-to-face and open, distance and e-learning (ODeL) teaching and learning modes. It also offers some of its programmes on
block, week-end and vacation release.
MZUNI has its main campus located in Mzuzu City at Luwinga which also houses its ODeL Main Hub. It has a Tourism and Hospitality Skills Application Centre located at Dunduzu Campus within the City. The University has a physical presence in all the four regions of Malawi through its purpose-built and well equipped ODeL Satellite Learning Centres in Karonga, Lilongwe, Balaka and Mulanje. It is also working towards establishing its future main campus at Choma within Mzuzu. As a growing University, it has a number of infrastructure development projects being implemented and being developed.
The University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions:
1. Department of Energy Systems
(a) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Renewable Energy Engineering
Candidates must have a PhD or Master of Science in Renewable Energy Engineering plus a Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
(b) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Energy Policy
Candidates must have a PhD or Master of Science in Energy Policy or related fields plus a Bachelor of Science in Renewable Energy with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
2. Department of Information Sciences
Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Library and Information Sciences
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Records and Archives Management plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
3. Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
(a) Professor/ Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer/ Staff Associate in Fisheries and Aquatic Science
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Science or related fields plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree will be considered for the position of Staff Associate. Candidates should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.
4. Department of Built Environment
(a) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Physical Planning or Urban and Regional Planning
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Physical Planning or Urban and Regional Planning plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates should also be able and ready to teach the following subjects: Land Use Planning, Regional Planning and Cross Border Studies, Urban History, Housing Studies, Global South Urbanization, Project Management, Planning Practice and Ethics, Transportation and Traffic Management, Environmental Assessment, Town Planning and Related Laws. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
(b) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Architecture
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Architecture or related field plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning.
Candidates should also be able and ready to teach the following subjects: Urban Design, Landscape Design, Computer Aid Design, Theory and History of Architecture, Building Technology, Property Management or Land Use Related Laws. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
(c) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Land Surveying or Geo-Informatics
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Land Surveying plus a bachelor’s degree in the same field with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning.
Candidates should also be able and ready to teach the following subjects: Cadastral Surveying, Engineering Surveying, Mining Surveying, Hydrographic Surveying, Geodesy, Cartography, Photogrammetry, Draftsmanship, Remote in Sensing, Spatial Information Systems or Land Surveying and Related Laws.
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.
For all the above positions, candidates should address their suitability to meet the following requirements:
(a) Experience
Candidates with two (2) years of teaching experience at tertiary level in the subject area will have an added advantage.
(b) Duties and Responsibilities
- To teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
- To develop and teach new courses, including postgraduate courses, as may be required;
- To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, including research;
- To actively participate in scholarly activities such as research and publication;
- To undertake outreach activities;
- To actively participate in resource mobilization activities;
- To serve on University Committees to which they may be appointed; and
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required and assigned by their Head of Department, Dean of Faculty or Management.
(c) Attributes and Competencies
- Ability to work as a member of a team;
- Progressive knowledge in the subject areas for those applying for Lecturer position and above;
- Demonstrable commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research;
- Evidence of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed sources for candidates applying for the position of at least Senior Lecturer grade;
- Good communication skills; and
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet given deadlines.
