Job description

The main role of a Community Engagement Coordinator is to lead on the community engagement workstream for the Neotree project in Malawi, as part of Professor Heys (Neotree PI) NIHR Global Health Professorship.

This workstream aims to:

  • Establish and oversee Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) groups at linked to neonatal care at Kamuzu Central Hospital;
  • Conduct rural dialogues to understand the health needs and priorities of patients in catchment areas of primary healthcare sites;
  • Work with clinical experts, HCPs, and parents/caregivers to co-develop family-centred care pathways that can be piloted at KCH.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • To organise monthly Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) groups at Kamuzu Central Hospital in conjunction with clinical staff and patients with lived experience.
  • To organise and oversee rural dialogues (1 per quarter) in primary healthcare centre catchment areas to understand the health priorities of parents/caregivers in rural settings;
  • Organise 4 co-production workshops (to be delivered by an external consultant) with healthcare professionals and parents/carers to design and develop family-centred clinical care pathways (for example feeding and thermoregulation)
  • Identify and train Parent Ambassadors who can support mothers/patients to care for their babies on the ward at KCH
  • Support the piloting of family-centred care pathways at KCH
  • Work with designers, HCPs and families to develop IEC materials (e.g. flipcharts etc..) to support parents/carers to deliver family centred care
  • Dissemination a) Organise annual co-production/ dissemination workshops. b) Support the UCL team to develop communities of practice to disseminate and develop new
  • public engagement approaches and ideas (e.g. via webinars)

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelors or masters degree in a relevant discipline (essential)
  • Experience working in healthcare settings, and specifically building relationships between patients and healthcare professionals (essential)
  • Experience of working within community settings (essential)
  • Experience of design, delivering and evaluating healthcare interventions (desirable)
  • Experience of programme management including budget management (essential)
  • Commitment to participatory approaches and family-centred care (essential)
  • Interest in co-production and implementation science would be advantageous.
