Job description

The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for facilitating compliance of the project with social and environmental safeguards and stakeholder engagement requirements as established in the Environmental and Social Management Implementation Plans (ESMIP), acting as a focal point within the Project Management Unit and coordinating the required inputs from the Project Implementation Teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support, manage and co-ordinate the project’s safeguards to ensure the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Implementation Plans (ESMIP), evaluate needed updates as necessary to ensure that the project ESMIP is up to date, manage procedures including the establishment of an appropriate field structure to ensure the appropriate level of support to technical personnel;

  • Establish a Grievance Redress Mechanism/ feedback mechanism and advising the key stakeholders in the best practice of monitoring and reporting on the social impact of the project.

  • Support in the co-ordination of capacity building and training activities to ensure the principles and procedures for Environmental and Social Management Implementation Plans (ESMIP) are well understood and complied with by stakeholders.

  • Conducting safeguard implementation review missions to support the implementation of social safeguards, particularly for the review of project quality and compliance with the social safeguards.

  • participating, on a selective basis, in operations support missions to assist project teams to address health and safety issues in complex and sensitive projects

Qualification, Experience and Competencies

  • A minimum of a University Diploma in Environmental or Public Health.

  • A least 2 years of relevant experience in construction industry

  • Good working knowledge in the operations of multilateral development organizations and executing agencies.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of social and cultural environments and of issues related to involuntary resettlement and indigenous peoples with at least two (2) related assignments that include Resettlement Action Plans (RAP), Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

  • Strong interpersonal, team, and negotiation skills, excellent oral and written communication skills in English
