Role Purpose
The British Council is looking to hire a Marketing and Communications Consultant who will lead the content development and management of communications of its operations in Ethiopia. The Consultant is expected to ensure a visible presence across diverse platforms, effectively communicate the organization’s works, support documentation and measurement of media activities, and generate reports to share knowledge with stakeholders. The Consultant will work within the Country Communications strategy and action plan framework, collaborating closely with the Regional Senior Marketing Manager.
Main Accountabilities
1. Internal & External Marketing and Communications
• Assist in planning and implementing different tactical approaches to increase the visibility of the British Council in Ethiopia based on the Marcomms action plan.
• Identify opportunities to promote the British Council in Ethiopia through events, meetings, and other face-to-face engagements.
• Help produce branded collaterals and promotional materials by coordinating with production houses and agencies.
2. Website and Social Media Management
• Support in ensuring that the British Council Ethiopia website content is comprehensive, up-to-date, and relevant.
• Create content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, for the project’s official accounts.
3. Media Handling and Event Management
• Develop and implement a media placement strategy, ensuring consistent coverage of the British Council’s operations in Ethiopia and beyond through national media networks.
• Coordinate media personnel during events and act as the key contact for local media.
• Support the planning and delivery of high-level annual events from a Marcomms perspective.
4. Content Planning and Development
• Work with the regional senior marketing manager and project teams to agree on messages, audiences, and distribution channels.
5. Brand Management
• Ensure brand compliance for the country’s operation, including marketing collaterals, email signatures, designs, etc.
6. Metrics
• Record and measure all marketing and communications activities according to pre-defined KPIs and metrics.
• Generate a monthly media engagement report covering both traditional and new media channels.
7. Capacity Development
• Provide assistance to staff using a supportive and collaborative approach.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
• Relevant Degree e.g. Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or Equivalent level of experience.
Role Specific knowledge and experience
• More than 7 years’ experience in managing communications within a large and complex organisation or agency
• Demonstrable experience in successfully providing expert advice and guidance on internal and external communications
• Experience in managing and mitigating communications risks and issues
• Proven record of editorial experience (i.e. proofreading, translation, knowledge of different content types, etc.)
• Demonstrable creative approach to developing, implementing and evaluating communication activities
• Background in youth marketing
• Demonstrable experience working with agencies/PR, events, design, marketing and communications
• Practical experience of using social media to extend the reach of an organisation, including through campaigns.
• Strong track in marketing and communications monitoring and reporting
• Strong relationships with key media outlets in Ethiopia
• Experience commissioning and placing compelling short-form video
Desirable
• Experience in a global organisation
• CIM or CIPR qualifications in Marketing, PR, or Communications
• Project management skills and qualifications
Further Information
Consultancy Duration – 1 year with possibility of extension

– Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Language requirements:
English and Amharic is mandatory. Proficiency in other local and international languages will be an advantage.
Requirements – All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Ethiopia . The British Council will not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permit.
