Responsibilities
- Examine animals and check their health status.
- Diagnose illnesses and determine the best treatment.
- Dress wounds of injured animals
- Vaccinate animals to prevent diseases.
- Prescribe medication.
- Advise on nutrition, preventive healthcare, and general care.
- Conduct home visits occasionally, in case of emergency.
- Educate the public about diseases and infections that are transferable from animals to humans.
- Record actions by documenting and updating forms, reports, animal records and reporting diseases to public health officials.
- Ensure compliance with veterinary procedures, ethics, policies, and relevant statutes.
- Operate diagnostic equipment like ultrasound and radiography machines and interpret the resulting images.
- Euthanize animals in situations they see fit such as in the case of a terminal illness
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
- Work experience of at least 5 years as a Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian Assistant
- Experience conducting various types of surgeries, vaccinations, and health checks on animals.
- Knowledge of medical equipment (e.g. X-ray machines) and anaesthesia procedures
- Problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain medical terms and conditions using simple language.
- Availability to take evening or weekend shifts in cases of emergency.
- Patience and a love for animals
