Job description

Visiting detainees, reuniting families separated by conflict, organizing emergency relief and speaking to fighters about their responsibilities under the Geneva Conventions are all part of the ICRC’s daily work. As an interpreter, you will be the vital communications link enabling ICRC delegates to carry out these protection-related activities.

Main responsibilities

Oral interpretation: from Haitian Creole to French and vice versa during: confidential interviews with persons deprived of their liberty; institutional dissemination of the ICRC; the ICRC’s dialogue with the authorities; activities aimed at restoring family links, including the dissemination of messages from the Red Cross, family tracing and visits to the families of detainees.

Written translation: from Haitian Creole (newspaper articles, correspondence, etc.) into French.

Analysis and reporting as required: analysis of detention conditions, security and other issues related to the ICRC mandate.

Desired skills

Excellent command of the French language.

Good working knowledge of Haitian Creole (level B2 at least).

A good working knowledge of Spanish is an asset.

2 years of professional experience. Previous experience as an interpreter or translator is an asset.

Strongly motivated by humanitarian work.

Able to work under pressure in a potentially hazardous environment.

Open-mindedness and ability to adapt.

University training/degree in interpreting or translation is an asset.

Our operational constraints

In accordance with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not post staff to a country of which it is a national.

Candidates must be in good health and will have to pass a medical examination before leaving for the field.

Applicants must have a driving license (for vehicles with manual transmission).

Applicants must be prepared to accept unaccompanied assignments (i.e. without spouse, partner, children or dependents) during the assignment.
