The Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO) is dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness and visual impairment in Africa through the development of sustainable eye care programs. Our mission focuses on providing high- quality eye care services, training healthcare professionals, and empowering communities. Our mission is to strengthen African health systems and partnerships by providing mentorship in eye health and community ophthalmology, conducting epidemiological and applied research, and facilitating evidence- based health systems planning and change.

KCCO is seeking a talented and passionate photojournalist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a background in photojournalism and strong storytelling skills. This role involves documenting the transformative journeys of cataract patients and capturing the impact of KCCO’s mentoring activities on partner hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Stories:

  • Conduct interviews with cataract patients to document their experiences before and after surgery.
  • Capture compelling photos that highlight the patients’ journeys and the impact of the surgeries on their lives.
  • Write engaging and empathetic stories that convey the personal and emotional aspects of the patients’ experiences.

Mentoring Activities:

  • Document KCCO’s mentoring programs aimed at strengthening the capacity of partner hospitals.
  • Develop stories showcasing the improvements in eye care services and the professional growth of healthcare providers.
  • Photograph key moments and activities during mentoring sessions to visually represent KCCO’s impact.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A degree in Journalism, Photojournalism, Communications, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in photojournalism with a strong portfolio of work.
  • Prior experience in documenting human interest stories, particularly in healthcare or community settings, is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Exceptional storytelling abilities with a focus on human interest and emotional narratives.
  • Proficient in photography and photo editing software.
  • Strong interviewing skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Personal Attributes
