The Pharmacist at UNC Project is responsible for ensuring that all study drugs and medical supplies are available and that they reach the study client at the right time. He/s should ensure that the drugs cause little or no harm to the study participants and staff. He/she ensures that the Country Director/CRS Leader/Scientific Director is advised on issues concerning the drugs in terms of their supply, stocks and expiry dates. He/she is also responsible for destruction of the study drugs according to standard operating procedures and protocol specifics, where stated. She/he should come up with drug supply budgets on a quarterly basis.
Main Duties
- Formulate drug and other medical supplies budget,
- Control inventory management, record keeping and stock monitoring at all times,
- Develop, implement and maintain statistical information system for drug management, pharmacy plans and SOPs for all studies at the project,
- Monitor drug storage and other medical supplies in the main pharmacy and other sites,
- Comply and review the study drugs policies available and advise all stake holders on pharmaceutical and other drug policy issues,
- Monitor the disposal of expired drugs and other medical supplies,
- Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on all drug consumption and procurement on all the sites and provide appropriate advice to the Country Director/CRS Leader/Scientific Director and the study coordinators,
- Take full responsibility on study pharmaceutical issues especially on drug quality, safety, efficiency, toxicity, adverse reaction, side effects and drug security,
- Attend to conference calls on different research studies whenever necessary and supervisory meetings at the project,
- Interact with International study monitors of different studies,
- Maintain patient/participant confidentiality and confidentiality of UNC Project operations,
- Provide on the job training to students and subordinate staff in the department,
- Supervise performance of pharmacy subordinate staff,
- Provide oversight in distribution of donated pharmaceuticals
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
- A minimum of a Bachelor degree in Pharmacy
- Registered with Malawi Pharmacy and Poisons Board
- At least four years’ experience

- Knowledgeable in relevant computer packages
- Competency in supervisory skills
