To work with the Deputy Technical Director: Eye Health & URE to ensure technical
leadership is provided in eye health at the programmatic level. To ensure that Sightsavers’
projects in eye health are conceptualized, designed, and implemented as aligned with
thematic and programme strategy.
Principal Accountabilities (specific activities and end results):
To and delivery of specific initiatives and programmes. Facilitating the capacity
strengthening of country, partner and global teams in the design and implementation of
eye health programmes to meet organisational quality standards.
To strengthen the global programme portfolio in eye health through leading strategic
and technical inputs in proposal development for restricted and unrestricted funding
opportunities
To pioneer new strategic initiatives and innovative approaches in eye health to improve
and enhance the quality of Sightsavers’ work, especially in cross-cutting priority areas
like climate action, gender responsiveness and fragile environments.
To contribute to the research, innovation, policy, advocacy and communications
agendas through close collaboration with interdepartmental teams and key external
stakeholders and working with Global Policy and Advocacy, Research and
Communications teams to ensure policy influencing is based on best available evidence
and where possible, direct programme experience.
To undertake senior level representation of Sightsavers as an expert in eye health at
national, regional and international professional and sector-specific meetings.

Knowledge (Education & Related Experience):
A Professional qualification in a relevant field, e.g. medicine, optometry, education,
inclusion, public health
A Postgraduate qualification (minimum Masters or equivalent experience) in a relevant
field, e.g. public health; health service management, special needs education; disability;
low vision/rehabilitation, international development
Significant experience in leading and developing programmes in eye health.
Experience of working with national government and international institutions such as
WHO and other International Development Organisations (INGD
Skills and Experience
To succeed in this role, you will need:
Essential
- Extensive and proven experience within a similar position, providing technical eye health expertise, service delivery, policy development and capacity building for programmes within national government and international institutions, NGOs, INGOs or Public Health
- A professional qualification in a relevant field, e.g. ophthalmology, medicine, public health
- A Postgraduate qualification (minimum Masters or equivalent experience) in a relevant field, e.g. public health, health service management, international development, or equivalent experience
- Significant experience in leading and developing programmes in Eye Health.
- Experience of working with national government and international institutions such as the World Health Organization and other International Development Organisations
- Knowledge of current issues and best practices in eye health
- Ability and experience in pioneering new strategic initiatives and innovative approaches
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Able to travel regionally and internationally for up to 16 weeks a year, for approximately one week at a time.
Desirable skills, not essential
- French or Portuguese language skills an advantage
- Experience of using technology-based solutions to provide eye care would be an advantage
- Experience of working in a role with Safeguarding responsibilities
