As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ. (Col 1:7 KJV)
The Book of Colossians is originally a letter that Apostle Paul wrote while sitting in a Roman prison. This was just at the end of the third Missionary Journey, and Paul depended on the Christian brothers who came to visit him for preaching opportunities. He wrote Ephesians, Philemon, and Colossians at the same time, and he sent the letters to the churches. This explains why there are consistent themes running through the letters.
Unlike in most of the churches, Paul had not personally planted the Church in Colossae. A Colosian man by the name Epaphras had traveled to Ephesus and heard Paul preach the Gospel. This very same man went back to his hometown and preached Christ as he had received the message from Paul. The Church at Colossae caught the message and, for a season, were running with the message. Paul says, “the message was yielding fruit in the Colossians like it was doing throughout the world”.
However, as with the Ephesians church, heresies started creeping into the church, causing confusion. Epaphras had traveled to meet Paul and get guidance on how to address some of these challenges. The response to these heresies resulted in the letter to the Colossians, which Paul says must also be shared with the brothers at Laodicea.
This festive season, we are going to focus on the book of Colossians as written by Paul, the beloved apostle. We would request that we read each chapter a few times to understand. This week, we will focus on Chapter 1 only. Read the chapter a few times, meditate on the text at your most convenient time. Try as much as possible to read the chapter at one go, a few times. Send questions to King Kevin if anything jumps out of the pages.
This is what we call a FESTIVE IN COLOSSEA! This season, we are going to focus on the book, highlighting the key themes. The idea is to explore the scripture and master the context and setting of the book, allowing the Holy Spirit to paint Christ in Us, the hope of glory.
