KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure site operations comply with environmental laws, regulations, and permits related to air, water, waste, and land management
- Co-ordinate the timely preparation of regulatory reports, including ZEMA returns, WARMA returns, NWASCO reports and Local authority waste management reports.
- Co-ordinate and facilitate Environmental Aspect and Impact assessment, and work with operations to develop best mitigation plans
- Identify environmental risks and assess their potential impact on operations, the surrounding community, and local ecosystems
- Develop contingency plans and emergency procedures for managing environmental incidents such as spills, leaks, or environmental hazards
- Lead or participate in emergency drills and ensure the site is prepared for environmental emergencies
- Develop environmental monitoring schedules for air quality, water quality, waste management, noise, pollution, energy consumption to ensure compliance with statutory and corporate requirements
- Maintain comprehensive records of all environmental monitoring activities, audits, and compliance efforts
- Compile and analyse data on environmental performance and provide regular reports to line management
- Conduct regular environmental audits and inspections to ensure adherence to legal and corporate requirements
- Facilitate Environmental incident investigations and coordinate the verification of closeout actions
- Promote the adoption of circular economy principles by finding ways to reuse, recycle, and repurpose waste materials
- Ensure that wastewater treatment facilities operate effectively and efficiently
- Oversee the proper disposal of hazardous materials and management of storage/ disposal facilities, ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards
- Identify and promote environmental sustainability programs, including the use of renewable resources, ecosystem and biodiversity restoration initiatives
- Foster a culture of environmental awareness and encourage employees to participate in environmental best practices, sustainability and conservation initiatives
- Conduct training on waste management, emergency environmental response, and the proper handling of hazardous substances
- Develop Environmental capabilities in contractors, through facilitation of induction training/ design material
- Manage SHERQ induction processes, through effective planning, facilitation and co-ordination
- Ensure effective SHE committee meetings are conducted to schedule through setting up the programme, attending meetings and making necessary recommendations
- Promote and adhere to ABF procedures, policies and guidelines including without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti Bribery and Corruption
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Full grade Twelve (12) certificate
- Bachelor’s degree/ Diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Preferably 3+ years’ experience in an operational environment (Factory/Agriculture), working in an Environmental role.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) is advantageous.
- Knowledge of relevant Environmental legislation and regulatory requirements
- Ability to plan, organise and track activities for self and others; problem solving and analytical skills, administrative ability and attention to detail; sound interpersonal and communication skills to be able to convey information effectively and influence others
- Report writing skills, ability to coach and facilitate learning, skills in MS Office
- Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
