The Commission dates back to 1954 when Civil Service Commission was established by British Colonial Government following Holmes Commission Report, 1948; Civil Service Commission was advisory to the Governor in matters of appointments; At independence in 1963 it was enshrined in the constitution and renamed Public Service Commission; Independence Constitution had Regional PSC’s but abolished in 1964 following constitutional amendments; It is the oldest Constitutional Commission and its mandate has expanded over the years.
Duties and responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:-
- Screening prescriptions for legal validity, drug contraindications, drug interactions, appropriateness of dose, frequency and duration of dosing and patience convenience;
- Preparing and dispensing medicines according to Good Dispensing Practices and;
- Counseling patients on use of medicines;
- Making extemporaneous preparations;
- Participating in ward rounds;
- Identifying medicinal gaps and challenges;
- Maintaining a daily log book for recording all activities undertaken;
- Recommending Over the Counter (OTC) medicines to patients/clients with simple medical conditions and making necessary referrals; and
- Making entries into the relevant inventory management records and registers.
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:-
- A Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree (B Pharm) from a university recognized in Kenya;
- Successfully completed one (1) year Internship from a recognized institution; and
- A registration Certificate by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
