Major Function: The Laboratory Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

 Specimen Handling and Preparation:

• • Receiving and accurately labelling and sorting specimens.
  • Prioritizing urgent samples and handling unsuitable specimens according to established procedures.
  • Preparing samples for analysis by centrifuging, pipetting, or other techniques.
  • Ensuring proper storage of specimens.

 Laboratory Maintenance and Support:

• • Maintaining inventory of supplies and ordering replacements.
  • Cleaning and organizing the laboratory workspace, including glassware and surfaces.
  • Disposing of waste materials according to safety protocols.
  • Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Ensure that equipment is functional and well maintained

 Technical Assistance and Testing:

• • Assisting with experiments and procedures under the direction of senior staff.
  • Performing basic laboratory tests according to established protocols.
  • Monitoring and recording test results, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Entering data into laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Following safety protocols and maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to the relevant Codes of Conduct and Ethics.
  • Preparing Laboratory reagents, stains for routine investigation

Person Specification

Essential skills and qualification

·        Certificate in Medical laboratory or its equivalent

·        Full registration with Uganda Allied Health Professionals with an up-to-date license

·        At least 1year work experience in a busy clinical setting

• Attention to detail: This is paramount for accuracy in labelling, documenting, and analysing results
• Honesty and ethical conduct are crucial in a laboratory setting.

·        A lab assistant needs to keep the lab organized, manage their workload effectively, and prioritize tasks

·        Clear and effective communication is essential for interacting with colleagues, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals.
