Responsibilities

Legal advisory and support

  • Conduct legal analysis and research on various legal matters of the company including new business streams.
  • Provide advice on different legal issues and draft legal opinions
  • Formulate the best legal solution possible after analyzing the legal problem in depth
  • Design and organize various training modules and workshops to raise awareness on legal risk in the company

Regulatory Monitoring and Analysis:

  • Stay updated on regulatory changes, legislative developments, and policy shifts at local, regional, and global levels
  • Analyze the potential impact of regulatory changes on the organization’s operations, business strategies, and compliance requirements

Contractual and Financial Analysis:

  • Reviewing / drafting large variety of contracts and agreements
  • Prepare contracts for internal review and approval
  • Maintain and update various workflows on the contract management system
  • Serve as point of contact for issues related to contract management
  • Scrutinize existing contracts & agreements, with a focus on understanding contractual obligations, liabilities, and potential areas of contention

Pre-litigation 

  • Upon reception of a claim, build the case by doing research, liaising with department(s) involved to obtain more information, compiling necessary documentation, liaising with other party or their counsel.
  • Propose outcomes to the case, including settlement to close the case before it turns into effective litigation or court action if necessary.
  • Drive Legal Mine Hunting sessions with Departments based on recurrent issues to proactively identify and close possible litigation issues/risks.
  • Ensure the pre-litigations’ process is applied from the reception to the closure of a claim.
  • Maintain updated pre-litigations portfolio.

Litigations

  • Assist the Litigations Manager in building Litigation cases.
  • Represent the company at Court sessions when needed.
  • Ensure the litigations’ process is applied from the reception to the closure of a claim.
  • Maintain updated litigations portfolio by ensuring all required elements of each file are present.

Others

  • Draft routine letters and legal documents
  • Interact with external legal partners especially the External Counsel towards the proper and efficient handling of all files’ incumbent on him/her
  • Ensure reduction of expenses stemming from litigations through speedy and cost-effective resolution of pre-litigations
  • Provide timely, appropriate and proactive legal assistance to all internal stakeholders.
  • Participate as a trainer in Legal Awareness sessions deployed to MTN employees

Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum of 4 years university Degree in Law

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a in house Legal Department of a major organization or in a Law firm, providing day-to-day practical legal advice to corporate organizations, performing Legal Research, contract management…
  • Having worked in the telecoms or highly digitalized industry would be an advantage.
  • Experience in supervising others is an advantage.

  • In depth knowledge of OHADA business laws.
  • In depth knowledge of the local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Cameroonian judiciary and the functioning of the courts system (Civil & Common Law).
  • Laws related to other activities performed by MTN (intellectual property rights, games, advertising, entertainment…)
  • Contract and other legal documentation drafting
