Job description

Duties:

 The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses. The candidate should be able to teach at least three of the following: structural geology, tectonics, metamorphic geology, mineralogy, field and general geology. The successful candidate must also be able to take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate research work and carry out any other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of the Department.

Requirements

The requirements for appointment are as follows:

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Candidates should possess:

(i) a Doctorate in structural geology and metamorphic geology or related discipline;

(ii) at least SIX years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution;

(iii) a minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognised publishers. Eight (8 of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases. The remaining FOUR publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognised publishers;

(iv) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 3 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing;

(v) sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed publications every four years;

(vi) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned);

(vii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years;

(viii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications in structural/metamorphic Geology. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students;

(ix) publications should be spread internationally and across journals;

(x) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 3 of the these);

(xi) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of the these);

(xii) evidence of governance and social engagement;

(xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations;

(xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University;

(xv) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD thesis internationally.

The curriculum vitae

(CV) should contain a detailed list of publications clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates published, name of publishers and, name(s) of co-authors if any and number of pages. The work should be categorised into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, and consultancies.

SENIOR LECTURER

Candidates for this position should have: 

(i) a Doctoral Degree in Structural Geology and/or Metamorphic Petrology; 

(ii) at least THREE years of relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; 

(iii) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least SIX  (6) pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, FOUR (4) of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases. The remaining TWO (2) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer-reviewed conference proceedings etc, published by recognised publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; 

(iv) sustained research output: a minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every 2 years; 

(v) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; 

(vi) be lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles; 

(vii) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; 

(viii) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); 

(ix) recognised as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these); 

(x) evidence of governance and social engagement. 

The following will be added advantages: 

(i) sustained research activity: ongoing internally and/or externally supported research; 

(ii) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; 

(iii) examiner/ moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; 

(iv) effective and experience in running a programme/course, etc., and; 

(v) extensive experience in mineral exploration and especially the mining industry.

LECTURER

Candidates for this position should have

i) the minimum qualification for appointment to the rank of Lecturer, which shall normally be a doctorate in Geology/Structural/Metamorphic Petrology from a recognised institution or an appropriate professional qualification. In exceptional circumstances, a relevant Master’s Degree (plus at least 2.1 pass or equivalent at bachelor’s degree level) may be considered.

(ii) show evidence of engagement in research. The following will be added advantages:

(i) Evidence of governance and social engagement, (

ii) teaching experience at a university or comparable institution.
