Job description

Reports to Calibration Centre – Technical Manager. The incumbent ensures precision and reliability in calibrating laboratory equipment, adhering to ISO 17025 standards and SADCAS TR09 traceability requirements. H/she will support the Ministry of Health’s goal of delivering high-quality laboratory diagnostics by maintaining rigorous calibration and traceability protocols.

Main Duties:

  • Performs detailed calibration of laboratory equipment per ISO 17025 standards, ensuring full traceability and compliance with SADCAS TR09 guidelines. 
  • Develops, implements, and updates calibration schedules to sustain optimal equipment performance. 
  • Verifies calibration methods and ensures calibration standards are fit for use. 
  • Evaluates measurement uncertainties and ensures they are documented in alignment with ISO 17025 guidelines.
  • Ensures that all calibrations performed are traceable to national or international standards, following the SADCAS TR09 policy on metrological traceability. 
  • Records calibration data, test results, and any deviations in technical records, including corrective actions.
  • Issues calibration certificates and ensure they include necessary traceability information, measurement uncertainties, and statements of conformity where applicable.
  • Identifies and reports non-conformities in calibration procedures or results. 
  • Approves and validates calibration certificates and related technical reports. 
  • Monitors and maintains environmental conditions in calibration areas to avoid impacting measurement reliability. 
  • Oversees equipment maintenance schedules, perform preventive maintenance, and promptly address calibration-related issues. 
  • Assists in developing and validating new calibration methods to enhance operational efficiency. 
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to junior staff or calibration technicians as required. 

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Minimum Diploma in Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. 
  • At least three years of experience in calibration and maintenance of laboratory or medical equipment. 
  • Certification or advanced training in ISO 17025:2017 strongly desired. 
  • In-depth understanding of calibration principles, including metrological traceability and measurement uncertainty as per SADCAS TR09. 
  • Competence in method development, troubleshooting, and validation of calibration procedures. 
  • Demonstrated experience of having worked or working in a laboratory that is accredited to ISO 17025 or implementing a QMS based on ISO 17025.
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring and its impact on calibration outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of metrological traceability principles.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills to ensure accurate technical records.
