BACKGROUND  OF SSURA

South Sudanese Refugee Association  (SSURA) is a registered non-profit  community based refugee-led organization incorporated as a company by guarantee by Uganda Registration Service Bureau Reg.#80020002855962  and operating in Arua, Koboko and Yumbe.Founded Koboko-Uganda in September 2016 mindful of the need to protect and promote psychosocial wellbeing, prevent mental health disorders, promote reconciliation and peaceful co-existence among the refugees and host communities, promotion and creation  of  economic activities  for self-reliance,  advocacy  and awareness on  legal protection  issue  for registered refugees who have moved to urban areas and in the refugee settlements.

ABOUT TIDS JOB

We are seeking a Communication Officer to support our internal and external communication efforts. The Communication Officer will  be responsible  for developing  content, documenting project  activities,   and is to enhance  visibility,   ensure  consistent  messaging,  and strengthen  engagement   with  stakeholders,   partners,  and the community  through  effective  communication   strategies.

Duties:

  • Develop  and  implement   communication   plans

–  Design  and execute  communication   strategies  that align with SSURA’s mission  and objectives  to enhance  visibility  and stakeholder  engagement.

  • Document   field  activities   and  success  stories

– Regularly  capture  and write impactful  stories,  testimonials,  and project highlights  from the field to showcase  SSURA’s  work and achievements.

  • Manage   SSURA’s   social  media  platforms

-Create   engaging  posts,  monitor  interactions,   and grow  SSURA’s  online presence  through  platforms  like Facebook,  Twitter,  and Instagram.

  • Coordinate    media  relations   and  coverage

–  Build partnerships  with local and national  media houses,  organize  press briefings,   and ensure positive  coverage  of SSURA’s   initiatives.

  • Design  and  produce   visibility   materials

– Develop  brochures,  banners,  flyers,  T-shirts,  and other branded  materials  for events,  campaigns,  and field activities.

  • Support  donor  communication   and  visibility

– Ensure  donor visibility  guidelines  are met in all communication   outputs  and contribute  to reports  and updates  shared with donors.

  • Draft  press  releases  and  newsletters

–  Write timely  and well-structured   press releases,  newsletters,   and project updates  to inform  stakeholders  and partners.

  • Capture  and  archive   photos  and  videos

–  Take high-quality  photos  and short videos  during  field visits  or events, organize  them in a media  archive  for easy retrieval.

  • Support internal  communication

–  Facilitate  smooth  flow of information  within  departments  and ensure  staff are informed  about key updates  and activities.

  • Promote  SSURA’s advocacy messages

–  Support  advocacy  efforts by crafting  compelling  messages  that raise awareness about refugee  issues and the organization’s   work.

  • Monitor  communication  effectiveness

–  Track engagement  across various  channels  and provide  reports  or recommendations    for improving  communication   reach and impact.

  • Update SSURA’s website content

–  Regularly  update  the website  with new stories,  announcements,   and resources to keep it current  and informative.

  • Plan and cover organizational  events

-Provide   communication   support  during  events  (e.g.,  World Refugee  Day), ensuring  they are well-publicized   and documented.

  • Ensure  brand  and message consistency

–  Uphold  SSURA’s  branding  guidelines  and ensure  uniformity  oflogos,  colors, and messages  across all materials.

  • Build community  engagement  tools

= Develop  simple IEC (Information,  Education,  Communication)   tools to educate  and engage  beneficiaries  in the communities  we serve.

  • Any assigned activity by the supervisor .

Excellent Written and Verbal Communication

– Ability to write clear, concise, and engaging content for reports, newsletters, press releases, and social media.

Content Creation and Storytelling

– Strong skills in developing human-interest stories, case studies, and documenting success stories from the field.

Photography and Videography

– Basic to intermediate skills in taking quality photos and short videos that capture project activities and impact.

Social Media Management

– Ability to manage and grow social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, Linkedln), including content planning and engagement tracking.

GraphicDesign Basics

– Familiarity with tools like Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or Photoshop to design posters, flyers, and other materials.

Media Relations

– Skills in building relationships with local media, writing press releases, and arranging media coverage for events.

Digital Communication Skills

– Proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for email marketing, website content management, and online campaigns.

Attention to Detail

– Ability  to proofread  and ensure  consistency  in branding,  language,  tone, and formatting.

Interpersonaal nd Networking Skills

– Comfortable engaging with staff, partners, community members, and media personnel.

Organizationaal and PlanningSkills

– Strong ability to prioritize tasks; meet deadlines, and coordinate communication activities during busy periods.

Creativityand Innovation

– Capacity to develop fresh and appealing ideas for content, campaigns, and visibility materials.

Teamworkand Collaboration

– Ability to work closely with different departments (programs, M&E, field staff) to gather and share information.

– Comfortable working in dynamic environments, including field locations, and adjusting to changing priorities.

– Understanding of and respect for diverse cultures, especially when working with refugee communities.

Problem-Solving Skills

– Ability to find solutions in communication gaps or when dealing with limited field resources.
