Job description

Corporate Security is a Global Function within Shell which provides strategic advice and assurance to the Business regarding all aspects of security. The Country Security Manager (CSM) for South Africa will therefore be instrumental in supporting and advising a wide range of stakeholders (senior business leaders, Security Focal Points etc.) in all security matters in South Africa.

Candidates who are non-security professionals but have extensive general risk management, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills are encouraged to apply.

The CSM will report to the Regional Security Manager Europe, CIS & Sub-Saharan Africa and will be based in Johannesburg.

Accountabilities:

  • In liaison with internal stakeholders and external sources such as government agencies, identify, quantify and assess security threats to Shell’s business footprint in South Africa.
  • Work closely with the Country Chair, Site Managers and Business Leaders in South Africa to provide assurance that there is a consistent, common, and adequate approach to security governance.
  • Be responsible for the implementation of Shell’s Security Standards across Shell operated entities in the region.
  • Ensure that appropriate risk mitigation measures are in place in order to reduce Shell’s exposure to security risks to ‘As Low As Reasonably Practicable’ (ALARP) and that fit-for-purpose security policies, plans and procedures, and appropriate security technologies are implemented.
  • Effectively manage/support Shell’s response to any security related incident, including by initiating and contributing to investigations.
  • Foster and maintain security information networks consisting of relevant government agencies, as well as private sector sources.
  • Ensure that security activities comply with international and individual country laws, Shell General Business Principles (SGBP), Shell’s Security Standards and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights in the Extractive Sector (VPSHR).
  • Represent security in the South Africa Crisis Management Team.
  • This role spans a large and varied footprint. This requires developing a detailed understanding of the full range of threats present and appropriate mitigations (organised crime, general crime, activism, terrorism, information security etc.).
  • Despite a prevalence of Downstream business assets and activities, the evolving nature of Shell’s business in South Africa requires an appreciation of all Lines of Business.
  • Regular travel is an intrinsic part of the job.
  • Support to stakeholders and business focal points may need to be conducted remotely, requiring sensitivity to stakeholders’ needs.
