Purpose of the Role
The Credit Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, assessing,
and managing credit risk
across the institution while ensuring strong portfolio performance and adherence to credit policies. This role also directly supervises Branch Heads, ensuring effective implementation of credit risk controls and operational excellence at the branch level. The role ensures that Hofokam maintains a high-quality loan portfolio, minimizes losses, and upholds responsible lending practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Credit Risk Management
- Develop and implement credit risk policies, procedures frameworks aligned Hofokam’s risk appetite.
- Identify emerging credit risks and recommend strategies to mitigate them.
- Conduct periodic reviews of credit processes and loan products to ensure they remain relevant and robust.
- Oversee the loan approval framework and evaluate high-risk credit decisions escalated from branches.
2. Branch Supervision
- Conduct regular performance reviews with Branch Heads and provide feedback
- Supervise Branch Heads to ensure implementation of risk policies, adherence to credit quality standards, and portfolio growth targets.
- Conduct performance reviews of branches with a focus on loan portfolio health, delinquency trends, and operational compliance.
- Visit branches regularly to assess risk practices, provide support, and enforce corrective measures where needed.
- Support under performing branches with targeted interventions.
- Promote a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous improvement across all branches
- Generate quarterly branch leadership assessment reports.
3. Portfolio Quality Monitoring
- Track loan portfolio performance across all branches (e.g. Portfolio at Risk, NPLs, and write-offs).
- Analyze risk trends across sectors, products, and regions and prepare reports for management.
- Initiate and lead portfolio review meetings and recommend strategic adjustments as necessary.
4. Loan Recovery and Collections Oversight
- Oversee delinquency management strategies and ensure timely follow-up on overdue accounts.
- Support Branch Heads and recovery officers with escalated recovery cases or restructuring options.
- Monitor and evaluate recovery performance across branches and adjust strategies as needed.
5. Training and Capacity Building
- Train and mentor Branch Heads and loan officers in credit risk management, credit analysis, and recovery techniques.
- Promote a strong risk culture and ethical lending practices across the institution.
- Develop training materials and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for credit and risk processes.
- Work with the Internal Audit and Compliance teams to address any credit-related audit findings.
- Promote customer protection principles and responsible lending standards.
7. Reporting and Communication
- Prepare and present regular credit risk reports to senior management.
- Communicate institutional credit risk strategy and updates to branch-level teams.
- Coordinate with other departments (IT, Finance, Legal) on risk mitigation initiatives.
8. Performance Management
- Provide leadership performance by ensuring effective management, leaning and development as well as succession planning in the credit Department.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff.
- Monitor performance and carry out periodical performance appraisals.
- Manage staff annual leave days and ensure staff take their entitled leave days.

- Good quality loan portfolio Asset and minimal loan provisioning expense

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Education: A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, or other quantitative related field is required with a relevant post graduate qualification.
- 5 years working experience in active lending gained in the microfinance banking.
- Experience in branch management and leading teams
- Knowledge: Sound market and industry knowledge of the banking sector
- Computer skills: Advanced computer skills, especially proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) coupled with graphic applications, data analysis and presentation.
- Exceptional planning and organizational skills
- Ability to handle several complex tasks simultaneously and also coordinate key projects with a variety of stakeholders.
- Communication skills: Great written and verbal communication skills with ability to prepare relevant reports to facilitate decision making
- Analytical skills: Ability to make deductions and meaning from rather complex and abstract situations and make sound decisions from them
- Eye for Details: Must be detail oriented
- Negotiation and interpersonal skills to enable achievement of a predetermined goal.
- Financial Analysis Knowledge: Ability to comprehend and analyze financial statements in regards to credit risk.
- Exposure to Credit risk modeling
- Willingness to handle frequent field travels and support
Age Limit: 30 – 45 years
Salary: The salary to be paid is in line with Hofokam salary structure for the role.
