Job description

This dynamic and high-profile job reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor and is responsible for providing crucial, visionary leadership at the Professor Rukudzo Joseph Murapa Institute of Peace, Leadership, and Governance (IPLG). The Director is responsible for overall leadership in the production of competent leaders and governance systems for economic, social and political development primarily in contemporary Africa and beyond. The role offers a unique opportunity to lead multidisciplinary teams in the training and production of innovative research, impactful community outreach on value-driven, ethical leadership and good governance on a Pan-African scale.

Desired Attributes:

  • A minimum qualification of a terminal doctoral degree in Peace Studies, Leadership, Governance, International Relations or Law;
  • Professorship would be an added advantage;
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in international peace building or, and making, mediation, reconciliation and governance especially in the African context;
  • Strong, demonstrable track record of income generation/resource mobilization;
  • Demonstrable experience of managing research/consultancy projects involving multiple stakeholders;
  • A strong track record leading and facilitating impactful training on competent leadership and governance in Africa, mediation, reconciliation and stakeholder participation in peace making;
  • Demonstrable and proven leadership skills and experience of working with a broad range of relevant stakeholders;
  • Strong strategic thinking with evidence of building effective partnerships;
  • Proven experience with managing diversity and thriving in an international and multicultural environment;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; and
  • Commitment to upholding the values of excellence, God fearing, integrity, diversity, professionalism and Ubuntu.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Professor Rukudzo Joseph Murapa Institute of Peace, Leadership, and Governance (IPLG), ensuring alignment with the University’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Develop and oversee innovative projects, training, impactful peace and governance outreach activities, and strategic partnerships at national, regional, and international levels.
  • Facilitate capacity-building initiatives for staff and students in peace, leadership, and governance.
  • Represent Africa University at high-level forums, upholding the principles of diplomacy, neutrality, and independence.
  • Plan to fund-raise (resource mobilization), oversee financial and operational management, including preparing budgets, reporting, and developing new funding streams.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative environment that attracts and retains diverse talent.
  • Assist with special projects and initiatives aligned with the Vice Chancellor’s priorities.
