Job description

The Hunger Project Malawi a branch of the Global Hunger Project currently working in Blantyre, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Dedza, Mwanza, Neno, Ntcheu, Salima and Zomba districts has received funding from KfW through UNICEF on behalf of the Government of Malawi to facilitate implementation
of interventions under the Multi-sectoral Nutrition Program including Early Childhood Development Phase II in Phalombe and Nsanje Districts. The project will be implemented for a period of 8 months in collaboration with relevant Government sectors.

The Hunger Project Malawi would like to recruit key staff with relevant skills and experienced to work on the project and ensure its successful implementation. The key positions to be recruited are as follows:

DISTRICT NUTRITION COORDINATOR (Two Positions)

Responsibilities

Project Quality

  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure effective project implementation, coordination and management, monitoring, supervision and reporting.
  • Strengthen documentation of nutrition project experiences and lessons learned and advocate for scale up of best practices across the district.
  • Work closely with the District Nutrition Coordinating Committee (DNCC) core team in the planning, organization and implementation of health and nutrition interventions.
  • Conduct regular quarterly planning and review meetings with the DNCC core team to review SUN implementation and progress.
  • Facilitate and support regular DNCC quarterly review meetings.
  • Facilitate regular updating of district nutrition/ health stakeholders mapping report
  • Present quarterly SUN progress update to DNCC.
  • Coordinate and organize trainings in liaison with DNCC core team and Area Nutrition Coordinating Committees
  • Ensure the project is implemented in a standard manner across the project area following the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) and Nutrition on Education and Communication Strategy (NECS) frameworks.
  • Promote integrated service delivery to ensure all relevant players are actively involve in activity implementation.
  • Provide continuous technical and administrative support to SUN district nutrition officer and SUN Field Coordinators and the office of M&E to ensure quality project implementation according to NECS.
  • Act as resource person for all nutrition related information and learning with the council and/ or
    departments in ensuring maximum quality and coordination of efforts in activity implementation.
  • Conduct periodic joint supervision and action implementation with DNCC core team to strengthen collaboration and coordination among nutrition  stakeholders in the district.
  • Advocating for nutrition inclusion and improvements in all appropriate district forums – DEC, DNCC, DMECC, Councils, CSO networks and other forums within the district.

Monitoring and Evaluation and Reporting:

  • Work jointly with M&E team to develop systems of reporting, monitoring and targeting.
  • Ensure strong collaboration with external providers of technical assistance, including management of visits by donors, consultants, supportive supervisors while maintaining strong relationships with those institutions.
  • Ensure timely production of SUN quarterly progress reports (and where necessary monthly reports) and submission to THP for comments prior to District Council concurrence for final submission to Donor.
  • In close collaboration with office of M&E and DMECC, regularly update district nutrition data.
  • Actively support and participate in relevant district and national activities and events that have a bearing on strengthening nutrition interventions.
  • Promote information sharing and cross learning within district nutrition team and other stakeholders in the district.
  • Support implementation, documentation and dissemination of innovative approaches in Nutrition and Health.
  • Provide timely and high quality contributions to all relevant reports as required (periodic, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports, etc.)

Financial Management

  • Engage with the project team to ensure that planned district nutrition activities are appropriately budgeted and implemented according to plan
  • From time to time, ensure that the Head of Programs and Nutrition Specialist are aware of any budgetary constraints which are preventing or delaying project implementation.
  • Prepare and submit monthly project budget forecast and budgets for project activities and ensure that they are adhered to.
  • Ensure that liquidations are done timely according to prescribed guidelines by the donor and The Hunger Project Malawi financial policies.
  • Develop monthly and quarterly detailed project activity implementation plans linked to the budget.

Growth, Learning and Innovation

  • Participate in and oversee relevant reflection and learning opportunities at district and national level.
  • In collaboration with project staff, ensure that lessons of sound practice are documented and disseminated.
  • Facilitate the use of M&E data to improve project quality and learning to enhance skills and knowledge of team members and support scaling up of best practices.

Key Working Relationships

  • Internal: Projects, Administration and Finance departments.
  • External: DNCC Core teams, District Council, DNHA, Project and SUN Community structures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • The applicant should have a minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Food Science or related field with a minimum of 3 years of progressively increasing work experience in health and nutrition related interventions.
  • Experience implementing community-based projects and a good understanding of community structures, NECS and governance principles.
  • Willingness to work cross sectoral.
  • Demonstrated leadership and capacity development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working jointly with district and national level government structures.
  • Strong inter-personal, facilitation and meeting management skills.
  • Experience with participatory methods and partnerships required.
  • Cultural sensitivity, patience and flexibility and proven ability to think strategically.
  • Willingness to travel and work in rural villages.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel and Power point.
