The Engineer, L1 Support-FiberCo will form a part of the skilled group of technical and management team who will be responsible for the technical operation and maintenance of Bayobab’s FiberCo, subsea infrastructure and assets. Bayobab FiberCo network is expanding and currently in Kenya,
Zambia, Zimbabwe, CAR, Ivory Coast, South Africa Nigeria and Uganda. This role involves 24 *7 operation and maintenance of Bayobab’s Fixed Connectivity and IP infrastructure as well as supporting other business units. The engineer will provide daily operational, vendor engagement, support of the solution design and implementation of the carrier wholesale services as well as supporting planning and implementation of the infrastructure required to expand Bayobab’s Fiber-Co Fixed and IP infrastructure and Global international connectivity.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs): Core, Essential Responsibilities:

The Engineer, L1 Support-FiberCo will be accountable to achieve the following objectives:

  • 24 * 7 Monitoring of Bayobab’s Network Infrastructure both Transport and IP related devices
    within Bayobab’s ecosystem
  • First Line Support I.e. Monitoring and troubleshooting of Bayobab’s Fixed networks to cover the
    daily 24*7 (365) Operations covering 1st Line troubleshooting and fault diagnosis,
    classification and end to end coordination of service restoration
  • Manage and Support the End-to-end solution implementation of L2VPN, L3VPN and SDH P2P or
    P2MP
  • Support on delivery of end-to-end wholesale capacity and managed network services
    (MPLS), both internationally and domestically within the Op-Co.
  • Support all capacity restoration in case of submarine or terrestrial cable cut.
  • Implement work around solutions whilst permanent solutions are being negotiated to
    alleviate capacity bottleneck.
  • Identify future capacity requirement spikes due to market changes and provide inputs to the
    capacity management team.
  • Support the delivery of systems through 3rd parties.
  • Support for Global Network expansion (links and infrastructure)
  • Provide various reports for wholesale to monitor the network and the services.
  • Liaise with network and technology teams in Op-Cos and FiberCo to understand the fixed
  • infrastructure landscape in the countries and support in the maintenance of the fixed asset
    register.
  • Ensure full customer satisfaction over the wholesale / solution delivery and support process.
  • Engage all Vendors, Partners, Subsea Providers and Internal peering providers on Bayobab’s Fixed network and support initiatives aimed at improving network stability, SLA, service
    delivery
  • Provide detailed functional and technical analysis on network faults/incidents captured within the Bayobab’s Fixed network and infrastructure to provide excellent customer success and satisfaction for Bayobab’s customers
  • Drive customer satisfaction and success by ensuring service restoration within set SLAs and
    proactively pushing for initiatives for continuous service improvement for Bayobab’s Network
    Services.
  • Ensure all stakeholders both internal and external are informed on any issue affecting
    Bayobab’s subsea network.
  • Co-ordinate preventive maintenance, cable protection initiatives, audits
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of Bayobab’s subsea network with regards to the
    devices, services, and capacities and accurate performance data
  • End to End process management support for Fault, Incident, Change and Performance
    Management involving Bayobab’s subsea network.
  • Submission of reports to Bayobab’s Management. O&MSC, NOC or Management Committee
    as required.

Role Deliverables:

  • Deliver the best service support on Connectivity service to Bayobab’s customers
  • Pro-active Monitoring and Detection of Network faults and service performance issues and
    restoration of the same via the ITSM Incident, Change, Fault and Problem Management
    Processes
  • Analysis of the utilisation of the current connectivity infrastructure
  • Effective support of cross-functional projects and alignment, especially with L2 /BO Support
    Teams and planning for effective service delivery within Bayobab’s Network
  • Contribution to Optimization initiatives on Bayobab’s Transmission and IP networks to ensure
    network resiliency.
  • Follow and manage submarine and terrestrial cable roll out, handover and eventual support
  • Operational and Customer presentations
  • Vendor and Partner Engagement during governance sessions

Role Dependencies

  • Inputs for wholesales business units covering existing Transmission, IP, FiberCo and Subsea
    networks in client solution designs
  • Understand the sales service order form and the customer requirements and translate to a
    technical implementation.
  • Keep updated records of the services provisioned and circuits on Bayobab’s Transmission,
    FiberCo and subsea infrastructure.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 3 Year Academic Degree in Technical/ Engineering Degree/Diploma or similar
    qualification
  • HCIA, HCIP, CCNA, CCNP or equivalent Associate and professional certification in Transmission
    and IP Systems
  • English – Fluent

Experience:

  • 5+ years in relevant experience in the international telecommunication wholesales
    infrastructure industry in IP/MPLS Network /Transmission Solution and Architecture design,
    configuration, and testing
  • Relevant experience with TX and IP networks, Minimum of 3 years of experience with
    multiservice platforms, IP routing platforms, SDH, DWDM, Subsea Cable systems

Competencies:

  • Ability to maintain and support operations in a large network with multi-vendor & complex
    network technology.
  • Excellent TCP/ IP networking skills
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across both IP and Transmission technologies in
    multi-vendor environment
  • Strong knowledge of Transmission systems i.e., SDH, DWDM and subsea technologies
  • Strong knowledge of PDH, SDH and DWDM multiplexer equipment and Operation and Maintenance of these equipment in Multivendor ecosystem
  • Detailed knowledge on the international telecommunication infrastructure industry regarding
    latest industry trends and competitive landscape within the Bayobab footprint

Other:

  • Ability to work in a shift set up to cover 24 x 7 (365) operations at night, public holidays and
    over the weekend within Bayobab’s NOC/SOC
  • Regional travel
  • Able to motivate and inspire team members across multiple Bayobab footprints.
