As part of our mission to support diverse learners, we are seeking a passionate and experienced ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor to join our team and help non-native English speakers enhance their language skills.

The ESL instructor will work closely with the Centre for Careers and Employability and is accountable to the Careers and Employability Manager.

Main Purpose of the Job

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to beginners, intermediate, and advanced students and community members at Cavendish University Uganda.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging ESL lessons tailored to students’ proficiency levels, with a focus on developing English language skills for both academic and professional purposes.
  • Develop course materials, assessments, and activities to enhance language learning
  • Participate in curriculum development by contributing to the continuous improvement and assessment of the ESL curriculum ensuring it meets the international standards and addresses the needs of the students
  • Students’ engagement and support by providing individualized support and tutoring to students who require additional assistance
  • Participate in professional development activities and collaborate with peers and colleagues in creating an environment that promotes lifelong learning
  • Perform a range of administrative responsibilities such as maintaining accurate records of student attendance, performance, administering language proficiency tests and preparing progress reports.

Person Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education –, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching ESL at the tertiary level, preferably in an international or multicultural environment.
  • Strong understanding of ESL curriculum design, assessment procedures, and pedagogical issues.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • ICT literacy and the ability to integrate technology into language instruction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and contribute to the university’s broader goals.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a positive attitude towards teaching and learning.
  • Experience in teaching academic writing, literature, or creative writing.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and another language.
