Job description

We are seeking a dedicated Headteacher (WOLIS) who will be responsible for creating a positive and appropriate learning environment through the effective and efficient management of the school. Under the direction of the Field Director, he/she will plan and make decisions at the school – on behalf of Word Of Life Fellowship (WOLF) Uganda, and ensure the productivity and welfare of all staff in the school. He/she will work with the School Principals in ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of education to the students, support teachers and staff and ensure an overall safe and successful school environment – in line with the mission statement, statement of faith, and philosophy of education of Word Of Life International School (WOLIS). As a member of the Management Team, he/she will assist in the promotion of WOLF Uganda Mission and Vision in the school.

Entry Requirements

Education/Credentials

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Education, or a related field;
  • A valid Teaching License from the Ministry of Education and Sports;
  • Must have an ACSI administrative certification within three years of being hired;

Experience

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • Proven Leadership and Management experience in the Education sector; at least 3 years’ experience as an Assistant Headteacher or Principal;
  • Classroom teaching experience of at least five (5) years; Classical, Christian teaching experience preferred;
  • Demonstrable experience in instructional design and educational methodology;
  • Demonstrable experience with stakeholder engagement and ability to provide technical support to internal teams;
  • Demonstrable experience in using Management Information Systems (MIS);

Expectations

The succesfull candidate shall fullfill the following: 

  • Should be a committed Christian with good standing at a local church;
  • Be compliant with WOLF Uganda’s positional statements i.e., Standard of Conduct, Child & Staff Protection Policy, Statement of Faith, and Camp Regulations;
  • Be exemplary; setting an example of servant leadership, using biblical principles to resolve disputes, speaking to edify and encourage, and faithfully demonstrating obedience to God’s laws in running Word Of Life International School (WOLIS);
  • Understand and support the classical, Christian, and discipleship approaches to the education adopted by WOLIS;
  • Must have read and be in substantial agreement with the educational philosophies described in the books, Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning, and For the Children’s Sake;
  • Professional and personal references must demonstrate observed manifestation of godly character and spiritual maturity;
  • Acts as an effective liaison between the Field Director/Board and staff, and between the Field Director/Board and parents;
  • Serve in various school committees as assigned by the Field Director;
  • Actively support the biblical role of parents in the education of their children;
  • Encourage frequent participation of parents in WOLIS programs;
  • Stay informed about all instructional aspects of WOLIS (Lower, Middle, and High School);
  • Stay current on latest sectoral, cultural, health, and educational issues affecting the school;
  • Build and maintain proper relations with the School Community, other Christian Schools, Local public Schools, Private Schools, the local Universities, Businesses, Neighbors (Community), Local Churches, and Pastors;
  • Represent WOLIS in all appropriate educational and government gatherings and associations e.g., the Uganda Christian Education Forum conference semi-annually.
  • Monitor staff morale and help in developing positive, biblical relations among staff;
  • Lead staff in maintaining standards of accreditation including annual reports;
  • Help in reviewing and periodically updating all WOLIS staff Ministry Descriptions;
  • Professional and personal references must demonstrate observed manifestation of godly character and spiritual maturity;
  • Adherence to the Parent-Student Handbook, WOLIS Teacher Handbook, the WOLF Uganda Staff Handbook, and the Financial and Accounting Policies & Procedures;
  • If married, the candidate’s marriage and parenting must demonstrate Christian character and maturity;
  • Must demonstrate the qualities and experience necessary for the position e.g., prayerfulness, spiritual discipline, leadership, articulate speech, organization, diplomacy, academic expertise, conflict resolution, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility; willingness to take on certain cross-departmental roles, which may occasionally be assigned by the Senior/Top Management;
  • Willingness to participate in on-field ministries whenever such opportunities arise;
  • Commitment to participating in WOLF Uganda Camps, Conferences, Seminars, and other Special Events;
  • Commitment to pursuing personal development and professional growth;
  • Respond in a timely manner to all requests from team-members, and other WOLF Uganda staff;
  • Availability to attend all meetings;
  • Network extensively with other schools (locally and internationally);

Roles (Duties & Responsibilities)

The ideal candidate will execute a variety of roles, including: 

  1. To oversee the development and implementation of the annual WOLIS Strategic Plan; Comprising the annual school-wide events, co-curricular activities, development goals and strategies in line with WOLF Uganda’s six major pillars i.e., Personnel, People, Programs, Property, Policies, and Finances.
  2. To liaise with the Field Director, the Finance Committee, and the Head of Finance & Accounts in preparing and implementing the WOLIS Annual Budget; ensuring that the school operates within the adopted budget.
  3. To liaise with the Head of Personnel Care & Services and Principals in recruiting new WOLIS staff; Overseeing the assessment of recruitment needs, advertising, shortlisting, interviewing, selection, orientation/induction/onboarding.
  4. To oversee the implementation of the WOLF Uganda human resources policies and procedures in the school, as stipulated in the general Staff Handbook, and the WOLIS Teachers Handbook.
  5. To work with the Field Director in mobilizing and seeking funding opportunities (e.g., grants, scholarships, special fundraisers) for WOLIS projects; Liaising with strategic partners, diverse expertise/bodies in mobilizing in acquiring resources to facilitate the achievement of the School’s mission and vision.
  6. To oversee the implementation and periodic evaluation of the school’s academic curriculum; Ensuring it reflects the Christian and classical priorities of the school.
  7. To manage the effectiveness and efficiency (performance) of all WOLIS Principals, Curriculum Coordinator, and the School Administrator; Holding regular meetings/briefings with them, periodically assisting in reviewing their performance, reports, guiding them and devising ways of enhancing the quality of their output. Considering rewards/recognition for high performers and improvements plans (PIPs) for poor performance.
  8. To collaborate with the Head of Personnel Care & Services, the Principals, and the Curriculum Coordinator in organizing and conducting periodic training and development programs for WOLIS staff, as per the performance improvement plans (PIPs); while promoting the classical and Christian priorities of the school.
  9. To promote/champion WOLIS culture (Vision, Mission, Values) and policies amongst WOLIS staff, students, parents, and other WOLF Uganda staff; Nurturing them through Biblical leadership, and instructions as per the doctrinal and standard positional statements, philosophy of ministry and strategic direction.
  10. To oversee the planning, organizing and conducting of WOLIS meetings i.e., administrative meetings and general-staff meetings; Following-up with the Principals, School Administrator, and Curriculum Coordinator in ensuring all deliberations are implemented, and reporting the same to the Field Director.
  11. To work with the Parents Representative Committee (PRC) leadership in creating a positive, collaborative, and supportive environment for actualizing the Mission of WOLIS.
  12. To oversee the management of WOLIS property portfolio; Ensuring all school buildings, equipment, materials, and tools are well maintained, and seeking avenues for property improvements and future investment.
  13. To guide the School Administrator in the registration/enrollment of students and parents; From capturing students’ and parents’ biodata, verification, documentation, to acceptance of terms and conditions.
