Job description:

Overall Role Purpose

  • Reporting to the Electrical Shift Supervisor, responsible for assisting in the establishment of preventative and reliability-centered electrical maintenance within the mining operations area, to ensure maximum operational performance is achieved safely and cost-effectively while ensuring compliance with relevant procedures, policies, legal requirements, and consent conditions.

Core Specific Responsibilities & Expected Deliverables 

  • This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures, and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment, and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and improve team safety awareness.
  • Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas and projects.
  • Installation
  • Installation of new electrical systems, and replacement of old, faulty, or redundant Electrical systems as per the Company and vendor’s safety and quality specifications.
  • Electrical protection
  • Ensure that all electrical equipment has the correct electrical protection settings, ground, voltage and current, and relay parameter settings for effective and safe operation.
  • Maintenance
  • Adhere to the company’s planned, predictive, and preventative maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Effectively maintain the electrical equipment for improved overall equipment effectiveness.
  • Reporting and record keeping.
  • Report all incidents immediately to the Supervisor.
  • Tools:
  • Maintain the correct and safe usage of all hand tools within your section
  • Experience in field equipment instrumentation such as CAN bus communication systems, PROFIBUS, and other input and output devices.
  • Able to diagnose problems and potential problems as part of defect elimination during planned maintenance activities or troubleshooting for unplanned failures.
  • Ability to read an electrical schematic/ single line diagram and use electrical test equipment and hand tools to diagnose and repair malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Help design, wire or re-wire electrical circuits to improve the reliability of the electrical equipment.
  • Ensure conformance to relevant mining regulations or international electrical safety codes.
  • Ensure that maintenance objectives are effectively communicated to optimize equipment availability.
  • Any other duties as directed by the Electrical Shift Supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a mining environment particularly in an open pit.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of medium to high voltage systems (voltages exceeding 1000VAC), electrical protection, electrical safety including isolation and grounding.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in maintenance and installation of: MV and HV transformers, AC and DC electrical motors, drives, PLCs, 24VDC and 110VAC control circuits and systems. Experience in maintenance of HVAC systems is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in maintenance of shovels (CAT7495, PC5500, PC8000), Drills (Epiroc 271, D65, DML; CATMD6640) or Haul Trucks (Liebherr T284; Komatsu 860E, 960E, HD1500, HD785-7; Volvo A40F); Excavators (Liebherr R9250 and R9100) and various ancillary equipment such as graders, dozers, and loaders is desired.
  • Knowledge of soft starters, star-delta, and DOL starters
  • Computer literate.
  • Electrical Craft Certificate (Diploma in Power Electrical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering) an added advantage.
  • Zambian driving License (Valid)
  • A member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)
  • Minimum of a Grade 12 school Certificate
  • All certificates must be certified by ZAQA
