Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) based in Nairobi, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) The internship is for six (6) months. Based at the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA) in Nairobi, the Regional & Construction team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) plays a key role in strengthening maritime law enforcement in the Indian Ocean West region. In addition to coordinating regional training sessions at the Seychelles Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Maritime Law Enforcement officers, the team is also responsible for overseeing infrastructure projects to equip regional Maritime Law Enforcement agencies with adequate facilities in order to better counter crimes within the maritime domain. The programme has extensive experience and knowledge in supporting states in the Indian Ocean West region in the fight against maritime crime. The Regional & Construction team has a programming presence in the following countries in the East African Region: Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique and South Africa. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours).  The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Regional & Construction team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches. • Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences. •Attend and take notes at meetings. •Assist to translate documents and materials. • Perform other tasks as necessary.
Qualifications/special skills

Completion of Secondary School Education is required. To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:  (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)(OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION)  The intern should also: • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
