Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a leading research organization in Africa with a strong track record in developing, testing and validating innovations for health. The Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a qualified Laboratory Technician to join the VPM1002 project. He/she will be responsible for performing various experimental laboratory tests in the TB laboratory and Immunology sections. The role includes preparing and analyzing samples, operating laboratory equipment, maintaining records, and ensuring safety and quality standards compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Performing routine and experimental laboratory tests – mainly in the fields of TB laboratory, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), GCLP and the study protocol in order to produce reliable and precise data for scientific investigations.
• Adhering strictly to safety and hygiene instructions to prevent accidents and exposure to hazardous material.

• Preparation, incubation and extraction of cells from QFT samples.

• Preparing and carrying out studies involving laboratory techniques.
• Reviewing of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment for day-to-day operation.
• Ensuring precise recording of test results and procedures required to maintain the quality of the laboratory service.
• Carrying out quality control on test procedures according to established laboratory procedures.
• Carrying out maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment.

• Preparing and storing clinical specimens according to established standard procedures.
• Carrying out or supervising reagent preparation, labeling and storage.
• Participating in relevant network meetings and training activities including conferences, seminars, workshops, forums, etc.; in consultation with the supervisor.
• Assisting in the training and supervision of laboratory new staff, interns and visiting students.
• Performing any other activities as instructed by the supervisor.

Qualification and Experience
• Diploma in Laboratory Technology, Microbiology or Biotechnology.
• At least 6 months experience working in a clinical/biomedical research laboratory, preferably in a TB laboratory.

Skills and Competencies
• Basic knowledge of standard laboratory practice.
• Basic computer skills e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and internet.
• Considerable analytical skills.
