Job description

Reports to Laboratory Coordinator. The incumbent is responsible for specific TB diagnostic/laboratory support and work in close collaboration with clinical team on the project. S/he will oversee research laboratory activities including couriering of samples for additional diagnostic tests.

Main Duties:

  • Responsible for overseeing the operation of the TB research laboratory and carry out tests as delegated
  • Supports the roll out of molecular TB rapid diagnostic platforms (e.g., Truenat and GeneXpert)
  • Supports the roll out of newer TB diagnostic platforms in line with research needs
  • Supports supply chain of TB laboratory commodities
  • Performs sputum smear microscopy
  • Implements quality assurance in the laboratory to ensure quality assured diagnosis
  • Ensures timely examination of all TB samples to avoid diagnostic delays
  • Supports laboratories to meet agreed timeframes and deadlines for testing and reporting results
  • Ensures the Biosafety Cabinet is routinely maintained and serviced based on standard operating procedures
  • Prepares budgets for the laboratory as requested by the supervisor
  • Archiving of samples for storage for future use
  • Maintains an excellent specimen workflow and result reporting
  • Ensures proper storage of testing records and any other laboratory related document
  • Supports implementation of laboratory information systems if made available
  • Attends project meetings and prepare monthly reports to provide progress testing updates as required
  • Ensures adherence to all standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

 Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Diploma in Biomedical Sciences
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in programmatic laboratory services support
  • Experience in TB diagnostic testing
  • Demonstrated experience in supply chain management
  • Demonstrated awareness and knowledge in TB rapid testing including microscopy
  • Work under minimum supervision
