Job description

The School Health Locum Ophthalmic Officer will be responsible for delivering essential eye care services to students, promoting eye health awareness, and assisting in the early detection and management of ocular conditions among school-aged children.

Key Outputs
• Comprehensive eye examinations conducted.
• Eye health campaigns carried out.
• Accurate records maintained.
• Pre-operative and post-operative care provided.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Conduct comprehensive eye examinations for students, including visual acuity tests and refraction assessments.
• Screen for common eye conditions and provide appropriate referrals to ophthalmologists when
necessary.
• Educate students, teachers, and parents about eye health, preventive measures, and the importance of regular eye check-ups.
• Collaborate with school staff to implement health education programs focused on eye care and vision safety.
• Assist in organizing eye health campaigns and awareness initiatives within the school community.
• Maintain accurate records of student eye examinations and treatments, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with health regulations.
• Provide pre-operative and post-operative care for students undergoing eye surgeries in collaboration with local healthcare facilities.

• Stay informed about the latest developments in pediatric ophthalmology and eye care practices
relevant to school health.
• Any other duties assigned.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS: Locum Ophthalmic Officer
Minimum Academic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Ophthalmic Sciences or Diploma in Clinical Ophthalmology and fully registered/ licensed with the relevant professional councils.
Additional Training: Certification or registration as an Ophthalmic Officer or equivalent.
Required Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a school health program or community
health setting.

Key Skills
• Knowledge of common ocular conditions affecting children and adolescents.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with
students, parents, and school staff.
• Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Proficiency in local languages is an asset.
Personal Attributes
• Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and adapt to diverse educational settings.
• Compassionate, patient-focused approach to care.
• Training in other specials like Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) is an added advantage.
