Key Responsibilities:

Operational Management:

  • Supervise day-to-day mining operations, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in line with the production plan.
  • Ensure compliance with mine designs, production targets, and overall mining strategy.
  • Coordinate with engineering, geology, and maintenance teams to optimize mining processes and minimize downtime.
  • Implement and monitor mining practices to achieve the best ore recovery and minimize dilution and ore loss.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure that all operations comply with the company’s safety policies, relevant regulations, and industry standards.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings, inspections, and audits to promote a culture of safety on-site.
  • Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety protocols by all staff.
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Team Leadership & Supervision:

  • Lead and manage mining crews, including supervisors, operators, and Attendants, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Monitor workforce performance and provide mentorship, training, and guidance to ensure a skilled and motivated team.
  • Coordinate shift schedules, assign tasks, and monitor progress to ensure production targets are met on time.
  • Resolve operational issues quickly and effectively, minimizing delays and maintaining high productivity.

Production Planning & Monitoring:

  • Work closely with the Mine Manager and technical teams to develop and implement short-term and long-term production plans.
  • Monitor progress against production targets, making adjustments as necessary to ensure the operation meets its goals.
  • Oversee equipment usage and allocation to ensure the efficient and effective use of machinery and resources.
  • Maintain detailed production reports and ensure accurate data collection for decision-making.

Equipment & Resource Management:

  • Monitor the condition and performance of mining equipment, ensuring routine maintenance is conducted.
  • Work with maintenance teams to minimize equipment downtime and address any mechanical issues promptly.
  • Ensure the availability and proper use of tools, materials, and consumables to meet daily mining requirements.

Environmental Management:

  • Ensure mining activities comply with environmental regulations, particularly regarding waste management, dust suppression, and water usage.
  • Implement strategies to minimize environmental impacts, including effective land reclamation practices.

Collaboration with Other Departments:

  • Liaise with the geology team to ensure ore grade and quality meet the required standards.
  • Collaborate with the processing plant team to optimize ore delivery and processing efficiency.
  • Work with the mine planning and engineering departments to ensure alignment between operational activities and strategic objectives.

 Qualifications and experience

  • Grade 12 school certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mining operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Registered member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) with valid subscription.
  • Experience in open-pit mining operations, particularly in gold mining, is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mining methods, equipment, and production optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of Zambian mining regulations and safety standards is a strong advantage

  • Proficiency in using metallurgical data analysis tools and software.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to generate detailed reports and present findings.
  • Ability to manage projects and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
