OVERVIEW

GAHP is a collaborative body of more than 60 members and dozens of observers that advocates for resources and solutions to pollution problems. GAHP was formed because international and national level actors/ agencies recognize that a collaborative, multi-stakeholder, multi-sectoral approach is critical to dealing with the global pollution crisis and resulting health and economic impacts. GAHP aims to reduce death and illness caused by all forms of toxic pollution, including air, water, soil, and chemical wastes, especially in low and middle-income countries. These efforts will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals related to pollution, particularly on Health (Targets 3.4 and 3.9).

ABOUT THE POSITION

GAHP is seeking a qualified, motivated, detail-oriented, full-time National Coordinator Assistant to help manage and implement the Health and Pollution Action Planning program in Uganda.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work independently as well as in a team, will be an excellent writer, extremely detail-oriented and organized, and have a proven track record of delivering work products on time. Research and data interpretation skills, logical thinking, and the ability to contribute ideas are also key. Ideally, the candidate will also have a keen interest in the health and environmental impact of pollution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development of the Preliminary Report and Action Plan (80%)

  • Work closely with the GAHP Consultant Program Manager and National Coordinator to implement the Health and Pollution Action Plan. Conduct a desk review and draft a Preliminary report on key priority pollution issues.
  • Draft, review, and edit the Action Plan and concept notes.
  • Assist the National Coordinator in the organization of the EPP Conference.
  • Assist the National Coordinator in planning and facilitating HPAP workshops, Working Group meetings, and any other events implemented in this project.
  • Prepare, draft, review, and disseminate the Health and Pollution Action Plan and related documents to stakeholders and international partners.
  • Assist in the development of a roadmap/ workplan for the next program phase.
  • Draft and review a power map of stakeholders.

Fundraising (~10%)

  • Assist GAHP staff in presenting the Action Plan and concept notes to partners and donors.

Administrative (~10%)

  • Feed important GAHP program information to the Communications team for inclusion in GAHP newsletters, blogs, and reports.
  • Assist in responding to Member and Observer inquiries.
  • Help prepare and review all project documents and presentations
  • Process expense reports.
  • Additional tasks as relevant.

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of relevant experience working in non-profits (in program management or implementation preferred).
  • Master’s degree preferably in related fields (e.g., global health, public health, environmental science, Chemistry, or related field); PhD is a plus.
  • Strong writing, research, project management and analytical skills a must.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel (i.e., formulas, referencing, pivot tables, etc.), and online research tools, or the ability to pick up new technology quickly.
  • Self-starter and motivated. Must be able to work with directives and minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience/knowledge in pollution, environmental, public health, and/or international development issues preferred.
  • Must be fluent in English; other languages are a plus.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
