The stigma and lack of understanding surrounding special needs in Kenya means extremely limited access to essential services such as education, affordable healthcare, physical rehabilitation, and vocational training

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Nurse is responsible for managing individualized patient care by promoting and restoring patients’  health through the nursing process; collaborating with the clinical officer and the clinical team providing physical and psychological support to patients, staff, and children. The Nurse is responsible to the Clinical Officer for the assigned Department.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs within the timeframe specified by the client facility’s policies, procedures, or protocols.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by patient’s condition and/or the client facility’s policies, procedures, or protocols and reprioritized care accordingly.
  • Perform appropriate treatments as ordered by the Clinical Officer in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by an individualized plan of care for the children.
  • Offering counseling on family planning methods, instituting the appropriate methods as per the client’s preference and needs and monitoring for side effects to the methods given
  • Conducting antenatal activities, including counseling and education, vaccinations, supplementation and monitoring.
  • Maintaining Cold Chain and monitoring storage facilities for the vaccines.
  • Offer pre vaccination counseling to mothers and administer vaccines and supplements to children below five years of age.
  • Maintains proper records of all the vaccines administered.
  • Ensure vaccines are administered before their expiry date, in the right dosage and formulation.
  • Monitor children post vaccination and report vaccine reactions immediately to the Clinical Officer.
  • Delivers care with appropriate age and cultural competence to specific patient populations according to individualized needs.
  • Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing intervention and progress towards problem resolution.
  • Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to adult/child resuscitation and advanced life support protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and client facility staff.
  • Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
  • Maintains current competency in nursing specialty by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
  • Responsible for dispensing and tabulating medication at the pharmacy as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Maintaining updated  health records, for both MOH registers and patient records.
  • Accompanies emergency patients to the referral center.
  • Reports priority/very Sick patients noted during triage process.
  • Helps school kids in taking their medications when they are in school.
  • Oversee that infection prevention strategies are observed in the Clinic by all.
  • Responds promptly to emergencies and informs the Clinical Officer.
  • Participating in  health education to the community.
  • Any other duty assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree/Diploma in Nursing or a related field.
  • Valid nursing license.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nursing.
  • Strong understanding of pediatric health conditions and special needs care.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with children.
