The Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating forklifts and other material-handling equipment to move, load, unload, and stack materials and components within the plant. The role ensures efficient and timely movement of materials to support production operations while adhering to safety and operational standards.
Key Functions
- Forklift Operations: Operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment to transport materials, components, and finished products within the plant. Safely load and unload trucks, trailers, and pallets to designated areas while ensuring no damage occurs to materials. Stack and organize materials in compliance with safety standards to optimize space utilization.
- Material Handling and Logistics: Support the logistics team by ensuring materials are delivered to production lines and workstations in a timely manner. Assist with organizing and maintaining inventory areas, ensuring materials are properly accounted for and accessible. Perform material inspections before transportation to confirm packaging, labeling, and quality standards.
- Equipment Maintenance and Safety Checks: Conduct daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections of forklifts to ensure they are safe and operational. Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the supervisor for immediate resolution. Perform basic maintenance, including refueling, battery charging, and cleaning of forklifts.
- Compliance and Safety: Operate forklifts in compliance with plant safety policies, traffic rules, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times during operations. Ensure materials are transported and stored without risk of damage, injury, or environmental hazard.
- Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with production, logistics, and maintenance teams to ensure smooth material flow. Support other plant operations when required, including assisting in manual material handling tasks.
- Additional Duties: Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
Education Background
- Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent.
- Certification in forklift operation from a recognized institution.
- Valid driving license.
Experience
- At least two (2) years of experience operating forklifts or other material-handling equipment in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Skills
- Strong understanding of logistics, warehousing, and inventory management principles.
- Proficiency in operating forklifts and related material-handling equipment.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and operating procedures.
- Good organizational and time management skills to handle tasks efficiently.
- Ability to conduct basic equipment checks and maintenance.
- Basic computer knowledge.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS) for inventory tracking.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Knowledge of safe material stacking and handling techniques.
- Strong spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination.
