JOB DESCRIPTION – PRINCIPAL OFFICER

Position Overview
The Principal Officer is the senior executive responsible for the overall leadership, supervision, regulatory compliance, and operational performance of the company. The role serves as the central link between the Board of Directors, regulatory authorities, insurance partners, and the internal management team.
The Principal Officer ensures that the company operates in full compliance with the laws and regulations governing insurance brokerage while also driving sustainable business growth, operational efficiency, and excellent client service. The position requires a highly experienced professional with deep knowledge of the insurance industry, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to build strategic relationships within the financial services sector.
The successful candidate will oversee daily operations, ensure sound financial management, strengthen internal systems and controls, and guide the company toward achieving its long-term strategic objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Corporate Leadership and Strategic Direction
- Provide overall leadership and management of the organization in line with the company’s vision, mission, and strategic goals.
- Develop and implement strategic plans that ensure business growth, competitiveness, and sustainability.
- Advise the Board of Directors on industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging opportunities within the insurance sector.
- Coordinate management meetings and provide updates on organizational performance.
- Lead the implementation of policies approved by the Board.
- Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, innovation, and service excellence across the company.
- Regulatory Compliance and Liaison
- Ensure full compliance with all laws, regulations, and guidelines governing insurance brokerage operations.
- Serve as the primary contact between the company and regulatory authorities, ensuring effective communication and cooperation.
- Ensure all statutory filings, returns, and regulatory reports are prepared accurately and submitted within required timelines.
- Monitor regulatory changes and advise management on necessary adjustments to policies and procedures.
- Oversee the implementation of compliance programs and internal control systems.
- Ensure the company maintains all required licenses and approvals to operate.
- Business Development and Market Expansion
- Lead the development and execution of business development strategies to increase market share.
- Identify new opportunities for partnerships with insurance companies, corporate institutions, and individual clients.
- Strengthen relationships with insurers to ensure competitive products and services for clients.
- Guide the marketing and sales teams in achieving business growth targets.
- Participate in networking events, industry forums, and stakeholder engagements to enhance the company’s visibility.
- Develop strategies for customer acquisition, retention, and satisfaction.
- Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the brokerage to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance.
- Establish and maintain operational policies, procedures, and service standards.
- Ensure smooth coordination between departments including sales, underwriting support, claims management, and administration.
- Monitor operational performance and implement improvements where necessary.
- Introduce modern systems and technology to improve operational efficiency.
- Financial Management and Accountability
- Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and cost control within the organization.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting and transparency in all financial transactions.
- Monitor company revenue, expenses, and profitability to ensure financial sustainability.
- Approve major expenditures and ensure funds are used responsibly.
- Work closely with accountants, auditors, and financial advisors to maintain sound financial management practices.
- Ensure proper handling and reconciliation of client premiums and commissions.
- Risk Management and Internal Controls
- Establish and maintain an effective risk management framework for the organization.
- Identify operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure strong internal control systems are implemented and regularly reviewed.
- Monitor compliance with internal policies and industry standards.
- Oversee the development of fraud prevention measures and ethical business practices.
- Client Service and Relationship Management
- Ensure the company provides high-quality and responsive services to all clients.
- Handle complex client issues, escalations, and high-value accounts.
- Maintain strong professional relationships with insurance providers and strategic partners.
- Promote customer-centric practices across all departments.
- Ensure timely processing of policies, renewals, and claims support.
- Human Resource Leadership
- Lead the recruitment, supervision, and performance management of employees.
- Develop a strong and motivated team capable of delivering organizational objectives.
- Provide mentorship and professional guidance to staff members.
- Identify training needs and support staff capacity development.
- Foster a positive work environment built on teamwork, ethics, and accountability.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Diploma in Insurance or related insurance professional qualification.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field will be an added advantage.
- Professional insurance certifications or membership in recognized industry bodies is desirable.
Experience
- Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in the insurance industry.
- Proven experience in insurance brokerage, underwriting, risk management, or insurance operations.
- Demonstrated leadership or management experience within a financial services environment is an added advantage.
