- To supervise the metallurgical laboratory and its functions, while assisting in other metallurgical engineering functions to support Process and Production objectives.
- To verify metallurgical equipment performance and provide specialised support to operational staff.
In This Role You Will:
Laboratory Supervision
- Manage the metallurgical laboratory and its associated functions by completing monthly feedback reports (i.e. report on test works, activities and Quality Assurance / Quality Control, Lab Inspection).
- Conduct / supervise laboratory test work and investigations (routine and non-routine) and produce reports, as appropriate.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with established procedures within the Contract Assay laboratory and associated quality assurance methods.
- Coach and provide technical assistance / training to plant operators, Metallurgical Laboratory Assistants, National Service Personnel, and students-on-attachment (internship) on sampling, and other relevant plant operator functions.
- Conduct monthly audit on assay laboratory activities and report, as appropriate.
- Verify the planning and implementation of preventative maintenance programs to maximise the efficiency and cost effectiveness of laboratory equipment.
- Oversee the completion of follow-up and corrective actions assigned to the metallurgical and assay laboratories.
- Produce daily reports indicating the jobs for the day and submit the report to the Senior Metallurgist
Investigations and Test Work
- Facilitate plant investigations to identify possible cause of issues and recommend remedial actions.
- Submit samples for QA / QC analysis and follow up on the results of duplicate samples sent to both on-site and off-site locations.
- Conduct additional laboratory test work, as required.
- Undertake ad-hoc task observation and audit of assay laboratory procedures.
- Compile Laboratory test work report and submit to Senior Metallurgist.
Work Scheduling and Allocation
- Coordinate the work of suppliers and/or vendors to analyse their product and conduct product test samples.
- Accomplish work objectives by determining your own work schedule.
- Allocate routine work tasks and special tasks to the Metallurgical Laboratory Assistants daily.
- Compile and recommend a training schedule for all National Service Personnel.
Health and Safety Management
- Deliver own prescribed outcomes and / or provide support services, by applying Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environment systems, policies and protocols.
- Inspect the laboratory to check and identify for any potential safety issues.
- Attend all health and safety meetings and inspections.
Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist:
Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):
- Bachelors’ Degree or HND in Metallurgical / Mineral / Chemical Engineering.
Additional Knowledge:
- Sound knowledge of assay laboratory and metallurgy principles and industry standards.
- Sound knowledge of assay laboratory metallurgy plant equipment.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 – 2 years’ experience in metallurgical laboratory, assay laboratory and / or process plant, preferably in a gold mine.
Technical Skills:

Working Conditions:
- The position is located at the Ahafo North mine site.
- Incumbent is occasionally exposed to noise, fumes, high temperatures, hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration and slippery surfaces.
- Incumbent occasionally is required to work additional extra hours, particularly during shutdown periods, test work that requires 24-hour monitoring, and gold circuit inventory taking.
- Incumbent is expected to climb CIL tanks and high-level cyclone clusters frequently.
