Current Status of the Plant
Management: GOAL operates the plant for FCC with WSI support. The goal is to transition ownership to FCC or the private sector for long-term sustainability.
Operations: With the success of the pilot, FCC banned alternative sludge disposal methods, increasing demand. At peak, the plant handled 15–18 trucks daily, exceeding capacity. Throughput has since been reduced to 12 trucks per day, but expansion is needed.
Financials: The plant operates at a loss. Fees are collected from the truck operators, but these funds do not cover the annual running costs of the plant, which are currently generously supported by Irish Aid (and WSI through the funding of the site manager).
Waste-to-Energy Potential: GOAL has been pioneering a waste-to-energy solution at Kingtom that transforms faecal sludge into a source of renewable energy, both biogas and briquettes that offer a sustainable alternative to charcoal. A successful bench-scale project has shown potential for scaling this solution, which will help generate revenue to sustain the plant’s operations. The production of both biogas and briquettes may also result in the receipt of carbon credits as an additional revenue stream.
Pathway to Sustainability:
- Improve plant management and oversight.
- Expand processing capacity by 50%.
- Establish a sustainable waste-to-energy business model and funding mechanism.
- Attract carbon credit financing.
- The plant would be handed back to FCC, with day-to-day operations being achieved through a new Public Private Partnership.
