As R&D Manager, you will play a pivotal role in leading APOPO’s Research department in alignment with the strategic goals of the organization. An initial focus will be the administration, finance, and donor relations for two innovative projects: Wildlife Detection and Search & Rescue. These projects are moving from research-based phases to operational trials and implementations. The R&D Manager will ensure smooth project execution and support the behavioral researchers spearheading these initiatives. Additionally, this role will involve mentoring and leading the team, fundraising, and stakeholder management to secure necessary resources and maintain robust relationships with key partners and donors.
The successful candidate will work at our headquarters in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Your profile
To be considered for the position of R&D Manager, we expect candidates to have the following qualifications and skills:
• Advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., Development studies, Business administration, Behavioral sciences…).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, preferably in a research or non-profit setting.
• Experience in financial management and donor relations.
• Strong people management and leadership skills.
• Hands-on, detail-oriented, with excellent planning abilities.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
• Adaptability and experience working in international and resource-limited contexts.
• Passionate about APOPO’s mission and innovative technology.
• Willingness to travel.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead the strategic planning and development of the R&D department.
• Support behavioral researchers in project planning, implementation, and monitoring, and facilitate the transition of research projects to operations.
• Lead, mentor, and manage the performance of the research team, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
• Prepare and submit donor reports and proposals, maintain strong relationships with existing donors, and identify potential funding opportunities.
• Oversee project budgets, financial planning, and resource allocation, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and organizational policies.
• Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of programs within your department.
