The Research Associate II, Manufacturing Systems Engineering is a foundational technical role within the Product Development team. This position is designed for a highly motivated Associate to contribute to the design, optimization, and management of vehicle production processes on the shop floor. The role is pivotal in supporting key quality and compliance frameworks, such as PPAP and APQP, and ensuring that engineering designs are translated into efficient, high-quality manufacturing processes. The Research Associate II will gain invaluable hands-on experience in homologation and vehicle type approval, contributing to our efforts to industrialize at scale and adhere to both national and international standards. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Functional Responsibilities: Process Design & Quality Compliance

The Research Associate II supports the design of tooling and production processes, ensuring that manufacturing systems are efficient, compliant, and aligned with engineering specifications.

1.1. Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) & Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)

Assist in the execution of the APQP framework to ensure that all product and process quality planning is completed in a structured manner.
Support the PPAP process for new and changed parts, ensuring all documentation (e.g., control plans, FMEAs, dimensional results) is meticulously prepared for supplier approval.
Collaborate with the Production Department to ensure that all engineering design and product specification requirements are met on the shop floor.

1.2. Type Approvals & Homologation of Vehicles

Assist in preparing the necessary technical documentation for vehicle type approval and homologation with national and regional regulatory bodies (e.g., UNBS, UN Economic Commission for Africa).
Support in providing component and vehicle validation testing services to ensure that KMC’s products comply with regional and international safety and environmental standards.
Track and manage the status of all homologation and approval efforts, ensuring a clear pathway for market entry of new vehicle models.

1.3. Manufacturing Systems & Process Optimization

Contribute to the design of tooling and production processes, using principles of lean manufacturing to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve quality. Including preparation and refinement of Production Work Processes
Identify opportunities for product or feature enhancements based on feedback from the production line and recommend improvements to Product Development processes.

1.4. Any other Duties: Any other Responsibility assigned by the Supervisor vital to Supporting Vision Execution, Enhancing Organizational Excellence and Fostering Cross-Functional collaboration.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education Background

Completed the Minimum Requirements for the Award of a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized Academic Institution NOT EARLIER THAN APRIL 2023.

Experience

This is a Graduate Associateship position; no prior professional experience is required.
Prior experience through internships or significant academic projects related to automotive manufacturing, quality systems, or process engineering is a significant advantage.

Professional Certifications

Must be at least a Student Member of the UIPE.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

1. Technical Fundamentals: Foundational knowledge of manufacturing processes, production planning, quality control methodologies, and automotive systems.
2. AI, Machine Learning & Industry 4.0: Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and their application in manufacturing (e.g., predictive maintenance, quality inspection). Basic understanding of Industry 4.0 technologies like IoT sensors, robotics, and digital twins for production optimization.
3. Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to diagnose basic manufacturing issues and contribute to troubleshooting efforts.
4. Communication & Teamwork: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
