The Senior Legal Officer will play a pivotal role in overseeing the legal aspects of our business operations. This includes providing expert legal advice, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, managing litigation, and supporting the company’s strategic initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in the insurance industry and a proven track record of managing complex legal matters
- Legal Advisory and Strategy:
- Provide proactive legal advice and support to senior management and various departments on a broad range of issues.
- Develop and implement legal strategies that align with the company’s business objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure the company’s compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including insurance laws and corporate governance standards.
- Monitor changes in legislation and advise on necessary adaptations to company policies and procedures.
- Contract Management:
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts, including policy agreements, vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
- Manage the lifecycle of contracts to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
- Litigation and Dispute Resolution:
- Oversee and manage all aspects of litigation and dispute resolution involving the company.
- Liaise with external counsel and represent the company in legal proceedings as needed.
Corporate Governance:
- Advise on corporate governance matters and ensure compliance with internal policies and statutory obligations.
- Support the preparation of board and committee meetings, including drafting resolutions and maintaining corporate records.
- Reporting lines:
- The Senior Legal Officer will report to the Head of Legal and Company Secretary of UAP Old Mutual Insurance (U) Ltd.
- Training and Development:
- Conduct training sessions for staff on relevant legal and compliance topics to enhance awareness and adherence to legal standards.
- Mentor and guide junior legal team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
- Qualifications:
- Law degree from an accredited institution.
- Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre
- Admission to the bar and a current practicing certificate.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience in a busy law firm or busy corporate entity.
- Strong understanding of insurance law and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven experience in managing complex legal matters, including litigation, contract negotiation, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively advise and influence senior management and other stakeholders.
- High ethical standards and professional integrity.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a multinational insurance company.
- Familiarity with insurance regulations.
- Advanced certification or specialization in insurance and corporate governance is an added advantage.
