Responsibilities
The Senior Manager: Employment Tax is responsible to achieve the following objectives:
Tax Strategy, Tax Risk Management and Tax Compliance (Mobile Employees)
- Develop and implement the MTN Group’s tax strategy for mobile employees, considering the business needs and strategic objectives regarding hiring and retaining critical skills across various markets/countries.
- Advise business on the tax regulations for mobile employees across multiple jurisdictions within and outside MTN’s footprint.
- Understand employees’ tax laws in the various jurisdictions, monitor legislative changes in relation thereto and understand the application of the double tax agreements in relation to employees’ tax.
- Provide leadership and guidance on the tax equalisation process for international assignees and impact thereof on the remuneration structures.
- Proactively identify any employment tax matters that may have a wider tax impact on the MTN Group and provide risk mitigation strategies/opportunities in collaboration with the wider Group Tax team and various in-country tax teams.
- Proactively obtain insights from global policy forums such as the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (“OECD”) regarding trends in employee mobility, how these may impact the organisation and develop strategies to address these.
Tax Advisory and Management
- Lead and manage any employees’ tax audits for international assignees across multiple jurisdictions.
- Formulate and implement tax processes in relation to mobile employees.
- Work closely with HR, Payroll, Legal, and Finance teams to implement employee mobility policies and advise on tax-efficient compensation structures.
- Collaborate with the Risk team in addressing any tax risks that may emanate from employee mobility and/or restrictions in employee movement due to regulatory, political or other circumstances.
- Provide guidance to payroll teams with the correct allocation of employee share schemes for mobile employees and executives, including the tax implications (if any) across multiple jurisdictions.
- Manage tax aspects of international assignees for the home country and host country.
- Collaborate with the payroll teams to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance for mobile employees in multiple jurisdictions.
- Manage year-end tax reporting obligations such as personal income tax return filings, tax equalisation and shadow payroll setups for international assignees.
- Ensure compliance with home and host country tax laws including the application of double tax agreements and other relevant legislation.
Process Monitoring and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with the HR teams to develop and maintain dashboards for tracking key metrics in relation to employee mobility e.g., tracking time spent by employees in-country for business travel, international assignees, remote workers and international virtual commute employees.
- Provide periodic reports and forecasts to senior leadership on mobility-related tax costs, tax risks, and employee mobility trends.
- Liaise with external tax advisors and tax authorities to keep up to date with changes in the tax laws, manage tax audits and disputes in relation to international assignees.
Collaboration and Leadership Management
- Develop a culture of strong collaboration and effective team working.
- Provide strategic, tactical and operational support to MTN operations on employment tax initiatives.
- Encourage knowledge transfer through the implementation of a knowledge transfer plans and drive continuous improvement philosophy.
- Promote an ‘MTN centric’ and ‘partnership approach’ to develop strong relationships with other working groups and ensure adherence to Group governance.

Qualifications
Education:
- Minimum 4-year degree in Tax, Accounting, Finance or related field
- Master’s degree in Tax (advantageous)
Experience:
- At least 7 years tax advisory, global mobility management or a similar role
- At least 5 years’ experience in manager role for tax advisory or global mobility management
- Strong knowledge of international tax laws, social security agreements, and global mobility trends
- Knowledge of immigration policies and global labour laws is preferred
- Experience working with external vendors and service providers in relation to employee mobility
- Deep understanding of risk management or auditing principles
- Solid Legal and Regulatory business landscape and context
- Experience in managing activities in a cross-functional business environment
- Experience in effectively managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
