The Shift Boss Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating open-pit mining operations during a shift. The role ensures that production targets are met while maintaining high safety standards, proper use of equipment, and compliance with all mining regulations. The Shift Boss plays a key role in monitoring crew performance, equipment utilization, and reporting on production activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Shift Management:
- Supervise and manage all mining activities during a shift, ensuring that operations run efficiently and safely.
- Coordinate with mine planning, engineering, and operations teams to ensure mining activities align with daily production targets.
- Ensure that sufficient manpower, machinery, and materials are available to meet production goals.
- Monitor the shift’s progress and make real-time adjustments to ensure production efficiency and safety.
Safety Compliance & Leadership:
- Promote and enforce safety standards and practices within the team, ensuring adherence to Zambia Gold Company Ltd’s safety protocols and legal regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and safety briefings before each shift to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ensure that all crew members wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with safety procedures.
- Report and investigate any accidents, incidents, or near misses, taking corrective actions as necessary to prevent future occurrences.
Supervision of Mining Crews:
- Lead and supervise miners, machine operators, and support staff to ensure efficient and safe execution of mining tasks.
- Assign duties to crew members and ensure that all workers understand their roles and responsibilities.
- Monitor the performance and productivity of the crew, providing guidance, feedback, and training as needed.
- Address any disciplinary issues and maintain team morale to achieve high levels of productivity.
Equipment & Resource Management:
- Ensure the proper use and maintenance of all mining equipment and tools during the shift.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the maintenance team and ensure prompt repairs to avoid production delays.
- Work with the mechanical and electrical teams to ensure timely servicing of mining equipment and machinery.
- Ensure efficient use of resources such as explosives, fuel, and other consumables to avoid waste.
Production Reporting:
- Record and report on shift production metrics, including tonnage, ore quality, and equipment performance.
- Prepare shift handover reports to ensure a smooth transition between shifts, providing updates on production progress, equipment status, and any issues encountered.
- Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, and equipment availability.
Problem Solving & Troubleshooting:
- Address operational issues promptly during the shift to avoid production stoppages or delays.
- Identify and resolve problems related to mining activities, equipment breakdowns, or personnel challenges.
- Collaborate with other supervisors, engineers, and management to address any technical or operational issues.
Continuous Improvement:
- Suggest improvements in mining practices, processes, and equipment usage to enhance safety and productivity.
- Participate in meetings and discussions on operational performance and make recommendations for process optimizations.
- Stay informed on the latest mining techniques, equipment, and safety practices, ensuring the team follows best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Diploma in Mining Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mining operations, with at least 1 years in a supervisory or Shift Boss role.
- Strong knowledge of underground or open-pit mining operations and safety regulations.
- Experience with mining equipment such as drills, loaders, trucks, and blasting materials.
- Familiarity with Zambian mining laws and health & safety regulations is essential.
