The Epidemiologists will be attached to the MoH/NPHI and will be responsible for surveillance and
epidemiological investigations of priority epidemic-prone diseases and other public health threats, and
support national programs and facilitate the Africa CDC support to the country.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Technical Officer Country Programmes-Epidemiologist shall perform the following major duties and
responsibilities:
• Apply knowledge of regional epidemiological and disease patterns to collect and analyze eventbased surveillance data needed by decision-makers within the Africa Centres for Disease Control
and Prevention (Africa CDC), African Union Commission and Member States.
• Utilizing standard operating procedures for scanning, analysis, source verification, and reporting
activities for public health events within Africa and those outside Africa with the potential of
spreading within the continent.
• Manage event-based surveillance and other public health data and information, including the
maintenance of a tracking database tool to log potential leads and follow-up activities.
• Support in the development and dissemination of surveillance bulletins to member states, Africa
CDC, the African Union Commission, and Ministries of Health that summarize the most recent
disease signals detected through media and informal channels, using event-based surveillance, and
other public health data and information.
• Establish and maintain a network of contacts within international, country-level, and local public
health organizations, and others to assist with additional information gathering, to confirm or
eliminate potential leads, and to engage in other event-based surveillance activities.
• Keep the integrity and confidentiality of public health intelligence data, contacts, and other relevant
information that you obtain in the course of your work.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge on even-based surveillance tools and practices, including use of
Internet-based search tools and establishing event characterization and reporting systems.

Qualification and work experience required:
Essential
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or any other related field with at least 5 years of
experience.
OR Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or any other related field with at least 2 years of
experience
Required skills and competencies:
• A minimum of 2-5 years of experience in supporting outbreak response with emphasis on
surveillance, training, technical support on outbreak response.
• Experience working with a Public Health International organization is a valuable asset.
• Previous experience working in Africa, that reflects an in-depth knowledge of infection prevention
and control.
• Demonstrable experience and an in-depth knowledge of operations of the Africa CDC, Regional
Collaborating Centers and National Public Health Institutes.
• Experience working and managing relationships with Member States and partners is a valuable
asset.

Language Requirement
Applicants must be proficient in at least one of the AU
languages (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili). Knowledge of one or more additional
African Union working languages would be an added advantage.
Tenure of Appointment
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of sixteen (16) months, of which the
first three (3) months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract may be renewed
for a similar period subject to funding availability, satisfactory performance and agreed deliverables.
