The Theatre Manager will ensure optimal use of the General Operating Theatre and the Orthopedic Theatres of Mengo Hospital.
The role holder will ensure effective support is provided to internal and external clinical clients while ensuring that these theatres perform effectively and within the budget. The role involves overseeing the management of these theatre staffing and theatre users, resources and systems while complying with Mengo Hospital policies and MOH guidelines and best practices.

The job will require the holder to oversee the continued and consistent delivery of quality, health and safety standards.

Other managerial duties will include working hand in hand with the various multi-disciplinary team leaders to oversee the scheduling of surgeries, scheduling of staff, availability of theatre supplies, quality control standards, overall oversight of theatre processes including adequate shift coverage of all shifts, as well as maintenance of safety standards.

Key duties and responsibilities
The Theatre Manager will work closely with the Head of Surgery and other Clinical Heads of Departments to deliver the following tasks:
• Plan, organize, coordinate, and take lead in ensuring an effective and efficient service delivery model of patient care and provide appropriate clinical and managerial leadership throughout these theatres.
• Ensure proper theatre utilization and scheduling of surgeries.
• Ensure discipline and acceptable standard practices among all Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Anesthetic Officers, and other theatre users.
• Will act as a role model and mentor to clinical staff providing advice and support to others to promote good practice consistent with legislation and Mengo Hospital’s policies.
• Theatre Asset & Equipment Management: Ensure careful movement of equipment in and out of these Theatres and ensure that all equipment is adequately serviced by service providers.
• Ensure the legitimacy of theatre users i.e. Doctors, Anesthetists and Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, and other Theatre Visitors.
• Will encourage, develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of others and self.
• Will ensure that Clinical Governance and Risk management are embedded within daily practice and promote best evidence-based practice.
• Will be responsible for HR processes such as training. Customer care is also a crucial part of the role to ensure the clients get the most out of their experience when visiting these theatres.
• Develop/Review, implement the theatres’ overall business plan including planning for expansion and maintenance of future theatres.
• Manage the budget and ensure that the financial and operational targets of these theatres are met.
• Ensuring monitoring and supervision of other Theatre service providers.
• Ensure that theatre standards are met in line with best practices.
• Ensure proper Stock management for theatre drugs, consumables, and other materials.

Position requirements (Job and Person specifications)
• Degree in a Clinical area such as Nursing, Clinical Medicine, or Medicine from an accredited University
• Licensed applicants must attach their Certificate of Registration with their respective licensing council
• Minimum experience of 2 years in clinical practice
• Computer literacy is a must, and willing to use hospital computer systems
• Excellent communication skills for dealing with all clients and patients
• Strong organizational abilities
• Business acumen for making sure the theatre is profitable or within budget
• Leadership abilities to manage and motivate staff
• Team work skills and the ability to work alone
• Attention to detail to make sure all aspects of the theatre run smoothly
• Flexible with ability to prioritize tasks
• Creative problem-solving skills to deal with issues that may relate to HR, finance or clinical care
• The ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
• Training in leadership and management is an added advantage
